Abstract Culture represents a complex, multidimensional structure as opposed to a simple categorical variable (Clark, 1987). This complexity is reflected in the structure of human values. Ten motivationally distinct value types which fall within two continua (openness to change versus conservation and self-enhancement versus self-transcendence) have been validated across 68 countries (Schwartz, 2006). The relationship between the 10 universal individual value dimensions and measures of normal personality has not yet been examined. However, systematic personality differences between cultures that score high on the value dimension of openness to change and those which score high on the dimension of conservation have been previously reported (e.g. McRae & Teraciano, 2005). The primary goal of the present study was to examine hierarchical relationships between major personality traits and the 10 universal values.We collected data from a multicultural sample (N = 215) of young adults (M age = 20) in Toronto, Canada. Our results provide evidence for a 7-factor integrative model of personality and values, which includes the following components: neuroticism, conservation, individual achievement/extraversion, collective achievement, concern for others, creativity, and egocentricity. We discuss our results in the context of cross-cultural differences in normal personality and values.
