Jack McArdle, Ph.D.

John (Jack) McArdle is Professor of Psychology and Gerontology at the University of Southern California since 2005. He earned his undergraduate degree in psychology and mathematics from Franklin & Marshall College in 1973, and a PhD in 1977 in psychology and computer sciences from Hofstra University. Jack then conducted Post-Doctoral work at the University of Denver with John Horn, and served as a faculty at the University of Virginia from 1983 to 2005. Jack’s research combines statistics and cognition. Jack has recently received a prestigious Merit Award from the National Institute on Aging for his work on improving the measurement of intellectual ability in order to understand how human cognition changes as people age. Jack has served as the Director of the National Growth and Change Study that assesses cognition in 1,000 older adults across time. Jack’s work draws on the research of his former mentor, John Horn, examining multiple factors of IQ to understand cognition. Assessing different facets of intelligence reveals that individuals are not uniformly the same on all abilities, and these abilities vary from day to day. Jack is also an excellent teacher and serves as the head of the Quantitative Psychology Program at USC.
