Abstract:
In the present study, we first examine whether US-born Latino youth engage in more substance use than their foreign-born counterparts. Second, in order to explain differences in substance use between US- versus foreign-born Latino youth, we test the hypothesis that, relative to foreign-born Latino adolescents, US-born Latino adolescents have poorer family relationships, which allows for greater affiliation with deviant peers and ultimately leads to higher rates of substance use. To our knowledge, no one has tested this hypothesis with a longitudinal, community sample of Latino(a) adolescents. Our study corrects this shortcoming using data from 669 Latino adolescents who participated in waves 1 and 2 of the Project on Human Development in Chicago Neighborhoods (PHDCN).
