List of Author and co-authors for QTUG presentation: Principal Investigator: Marie Aline Sillice, BA

Abstract:

This pilot study investigated whether historically negative stereotypes of Blacks reported by Katz and Braly, in 1933, continue to be less evident in stereotypes of Black men by White college participants. We also examined if current stereotypes of Blacks mirror historically negative stereotypes of the Black male. Fifteen White participants were instructed to choose the top five traits they believe characterize Black men from an updated version of Katz and Braly (1933) adjective checklist. The revised adjective checklist consisted of 92 traits. Results show that negative stereotypes reported by Katz and Braly in 1933 continue to diminish in stereotypes of Black men by Whites. However, current stereotypes of Black men by Whites are comprised of historically negative images of the Black male. Implications for these findings for Black men and future directions will be discussed in the poster.
