Drs. Judith D. Singer and John B. Willett
Judith D. Singer is the James Bryant Conant Professor of Education, and John B. Willett is the Charles William Eliot Professor of Education and , both at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Singer has recently been appointed Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity at Harvard. Singer holds a PhD in Statistics from Harvard University; Willett holds a PhD in Quantitative Methods from Stanford University. Collaborators for over 20 years, their professional lives focus on improving the quantitative methods used in social, educational and behavioral research.
Singer and Willett are best known for their contributions to the practice of individual growth modeling, survival analysis, and multilevel modeling, and to making these and other statistical methods accessible to empirical researchers. Their most recent book is Applied Longitudinal Data Analysis: Modeling Change and Event Occurrence (2003, Oxford University Press), for which they received Honorable Mention from the American Publishers Association for the best Mathematics & Statistics book of 2003. They are now writing a companion volume focusing more broadly on the analysis of multilevel data.
The pair has received numerous awards for their work, including fellowships at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences and election to the National Academy of Education. Over the years, the American Educational Research Association (AERA) has also given them several awards, including the Raymond B. Cattell Award, the Review of Research Award, and the Palmer O. Johnson Award.
