Stems consist of the quill (the vertical part) and the extension (the horizontal part), and the clamp that goes around the handlebars. On a traditional quill stem, here are the available measurements (e.g., for Nitto stems):

Quill heights: 190mm (7.48”) or 225mm (8.86”)
Clamp diameters: 25.4mm or 26.0mm.

Nitto Technomic Standard $56 (RIV)
This Nitto Technomic Standard (not deluxe) is one notch down from the Technomic Deluxe on the totem pole of fanciness and costly fabrication methods. Rather than being cold-forged, it is gravity cast. In other words, it is poured into a mold, rather than being hammered into shape with a forging die (a giant and powerful press). The gravity refers to the way the molten aluminum is allowed to cool slowly, while gravity floats the bubbles up to the top (like when you pour soda), resulting in a dense, void-less final product. It's a strong way to go, and since it's made by Nitto, no worries about its safety. Go this way if you want the extra length (the tech deluxe quill is 190mm, standard is 225mm). Usually we sell these to folks who are retrofitting existing bikes that are too small. If you're starting out fresh, you shouldn't need this unless of course, you have severe back problems and can't really bend at the waist. Technomic Standard stems are available with the 25.4mm clamp diameter in extensions 9cm to 12cm. And 26.0mm clamp diameter Tech Std stems are available in extensions 7cm to 11cm. If you need something even higher than get the Stem Riser.

Nitto Technomic Stem, Tall, 26.0 Clamp $49 (VO)
Here is a traditional quill stem that lets you get you handlebars way up high. It's great for folks with stiff backs and for city bikes. As with all Nitto products the workmanship and finish are first rate. About 240mm in overall height (or 16cm above the minimum insert line), 26mm clamp, and a standard 22.2mm quill diameter.

** Nitto Technomic Deluxe: $63 (RIV)
This stem goes onto 90 percent of the bikes we sell, so that should tell you how much we like it. It is beautiful, strong, and has a 190mm tall quill (7.48”) that lets you raise the handlebar as high as it can get without looking marginally goofy. It is cold-forged aluminum. Quill diameter is 22.2mm, so it fits in all of our bikes and most other traditional bikes with 1-inch threaded steerers. We sell it with a 26mm handlebar clamp (which fits all Nitto and many other drop bars, and the Nitto Moustache H'bar) or 25.4 clamp which works with an Albatross, Dove, or straight bar. Get the Nitto 26.0 to 25.4 shim (part #16-095) if you need to use the 7, 8, or 9cm stem and a 25.4 bar.

Technomic Tallux $70 (RIV)
We're the only ones in the galaxy with this stem---because it was made at our request. It's just like a Technomic Deluxe, but instead of a 190mm tall quill, it has a 225mm tall quill----just like the Technomic Standard. But unlike the perfectly good Standard, this one--- like the Deluxe--- is cold forged and finely finished. So now, you can go tall and lustrous; not just tall OR lustrous. Always with a 22.2mm quill. Clamp diameters either 25.4mm or 26.0mm.

Grand Compe ENE Quill Stem $60 (VO)
This traditional alloy quill stem is another high quality addition Dia Compe's growing line of ENE classic components. It's nicely polished and displays small logos. A good choice for those who like an alloy stem, but don't need the extra quill length and extra weight of a Technomic. They are currently only made in 80mm amd 100mm extensions, but we will stock more sizes as they become available. 180mm total height, 115mm above the min. insert line. 26.0mm clamp. Alloy wedge. Weight is 340g for the 100mm size.

Here is a less expensive chrome stem with positive rise. The VO Quill Stem is a smooth welded chrome plated 1" quill stem. It has a 17-degree positive rise. Total quill length 190mm, 120mm above the min. insert line. (Interestingly, it will get your bars as high as a Technomic stem, yet it weighs a little less.) Weight is 367g for the 100mm size.
