TWO SET UPS: (1) Winter; (2) Bikepacking
(1) Winter
Need a place to carry rain gear and warm clothes; plus lunch
Sweetroll (or Ortlieb Handlebar Pack) versus Harness
Sweetroll
Pros: simpler; fewer straps
Cons: less versatile
--
(2) Bikepacking; (A) Rackless set up; (B) Rack and panniers
Need to carry: Tent; Sleeping bag; Sleeping pad; Clothing; Food; Water; Stove
--
(2A) Rackless set up:
Carry tent and sleeping bag on handlebars (harness)
Carry clothing, food, and stove on forks
This just won't be enough space
--
(2B) Rack and panniers
Carry some things on handlebars (sweetroll or harness + dry bag)
Carry the rest in panniers (either on front or on rear)
Front or rear?
Front:
pro: down low
con: all weight in front; can't use fork bags
Rear
pro: distributed, particularly if harness with tent is used on front; can use fork bags
con: up higher;
