1995 Trek 830 Mountain Track
SN: GW4Q6302
Made in 1994
Frame size: 21" (53.5cm)
Wheelbase: 42.1" (107mm)
Beginning in about 1993 (model year 94), an 8 character alphanumeric code was used for some bikes. It begins with G and another letter (e.g. GN, GQ, GR, GS, GU, GV, GW, GY and GZ). These are followed either by: 6 numerals, or a numeral and a letter followed by four numerals. The first numeral in the SN may be the year of serialization.

https://bike.shimano.com/en-US/information/customer-services/recalls-and-repairs/fc-ct90-m920-mc12-cranks.html
Release # 97-149
The cranks are numbered FC-CT90, FC-M290 and FC-MC12. These numbers are located on the back or inner side of the right crank arm.
Consumers should check their bicycles' crank assemblies. If they are involved in this recall, consumers should stop using their bicycles immediately and call Shimano at 800-353-4719 to arrange for the free replacement and installation of a new crank assembly at a nearby authorized repair shop.
02-12-16 For anybody that is curious I took my 1995 Trek 820 into the shop this week to see if Shiamno is still honoring the recall and they are. Parts coming from California and should be here next week! New crank, front derailleur, bottom bracket and chain on a 21 year old bike for free...can't beat that. The guy at the shop said the Shimano rep didn't even blink or ask for a serial number, he just sent the parts right out. Kinda amazing customer service they have going on there. https://www.bikeforums.net/recall-announcements/334379-shimano-crank-recall-2.html

Mike's advice regarding beach bikes: "spray tri flow into steel fork if you have one, grease the seat post a lot and wax everything."

What you want to do is get a thin film of something a little bit waxy or greasy over the metal parts, and then that will fend off moisture that will begin the oxidation process. Silicon spray, for instance, is a generic product that a number of lubricant manufacturers sell (in my garage I have Prestone Silicon Spray about $3 a can) and it works well as a rust inhibitor. Just spray it on and wipe off the excess, or let it dry for extra rust protection.
Another good product is Boeshield T-9, developed by Boeing as a rust inhibitor on aircraft and aircraft parts. It contains lubricants and waxes, has excellent penetrating qualities, and dries to a waxy film that can last for weeks or even months. It s about $7 for four ounces, and is available from places such as Bike Nashbar (nashbar.com). It s also an excellent chain lubricant.
Lastly, linseed oil a drying oil can be rubbed onto bikes and bike parts for a durable, inexpensive rust-preventative. I believe it s one of the ingredients in J.P. Weigle s Frame Saver ($15; competitivecyclist.com) which is often recommended as a treatment for the interior of steel frames: spray it down the seat tube, top tubes and bottom bracket area, and allow to dry.

A grease-injection system will allow you to clean any gunk out of the hubs, bottom bracket, pedals and even headset with a squirt of a grease gun.
Look for a crusier with an aluminum frame and fork, Eletra, Jamis, Hampton Crusier, and Diamondback make a crusier model like such. Jamis Taxi crusier, altough a rental fleet favorite, are specced with a cartridge bottom bracket, which are about the same durablitly as cup and cone BBs, but are easier to service and are not as prone to damage that makes the bike unservicable. Try to get a nickel plated chain, and lube it with a good teflon lube, such as Tri-FLow or Liquid Wrench Super Lubricant. Beach riding is messy and confusing sometimes. You'd think a dry chain lube would work because of the blowing sand, but the inevitable water contact will wash it off. About once a year, you'll want to repack the hubs, but have an LBS do the rear hub if it's a coaster brake.
