Kava for Anxiety

Kava is a traditional herbal medicine used by South Pacific islanders. It is made from the root of Piper methysticum and is used for ceremonial, social and medicinal purposes. Kava is now considered as an alternative medicine for reducing anxiety. In 12 controlled studies Kava was found to be better than a placebo for reducing general anxiety.

St. Johns Wort has been found effective for treating mild depression. In 29 studies it was found to be better than a placebo, and just as effective as manufactured antidepressants like Prozac. It also had fewer side effects.

Herbal treatments are not without risks and side effects. Herbal remedies are not regulated by the FDA and they less studied than pharmaceuticals. Sometimes herbal supplements are advertised with spectacular results which are not supported with evidence and proper clinical trials. Still many researchers are hopeful that herbals will prove to be useful medicines.
