Meerkats are skillful hunters, that manage to even kill snakes and scorpions.
Though relatively inexpensive at 25,000 ZD, newer players may have difficulty saving up enough cash to acquire this animal when it first becomes available at level 15. It's worth the effort, however---meerkats take up very little space and are happy in the low-cost grassland enclosure, as well as rock enclosures or savanna enclosures.
Meerkat animations alternate between sitting up alertly for sentry duty, foraging for food, and curling up for a nap. Though one of the smaller My Free Zoo animals, they're quite lively and definitely add a sense of bustling activity to any size zoo.
Breeding time is relatively short at 6 hours, but, like most animals in the game, the base chance for breeding success is quite low at 5%. With enclosure habitations, watering holes and Breeding Station upgrades this chance can be elevated to 85%.

Costing only 2,500 ZD, meerkat breeding is easily affordable even to lower-level players. Compared to many animals fertility feed for meerkats is relatively low at 25 diamonds, though the considerably less-costly habitations and watering holes suffice for most players attempting to breed this animal.
Unlike some sexually dimorphic animals in the game, male and female meerkats are indistinguishable from each other. Baby meerkats look like miniature versions of adults.
Meerkats have a base popularity rating of 2,500 and will help attract children to the zoo. The base rating is increased somewhat by placing the animals in the more advanced---and more expensive---rock or savanna enclosures.
While 2,500 popularity is relatively low---compared to, say, 6,000 popularity for the donkey available at level 16---the meerkat's minimal space requirements, low breeding costs and large herd size of 10 animals more than compensates.
Other animals around this level range with significantly higher popularity---again, like the donkey---cost diamonds, something lower-level players generally do not have in abundance. As far as getting bang for your buck Zoo Dollar around level 15, the meerkat really can't be beat.
With the introduction of the rabbit mascot during the 2-year anniversary event in February 2014, the rabbit began to appear more frequently than the meerkat in splash screens and advertisements. Multiple rabbit-themed decorations have since been introduced to the game during various campaigns or events, while the only meerkat decorations are breeding statues won through weekly breeding competitions.

Like most animals purchased with ZD, meerkat pieces are quite rare and very costly in diamonds to complete. Since the animal is easier to obtain by purchasing it through the shop, these cards have little practical trade value.
Real-world meerkats live in family groups, called clans, in the savannas and deserts of Africa. Relatives of the cobra-slaying mongoose, meerkats are opportunistic feeders that primarily eat insects but will also consume small mammals, fungi, snakes, lizards, plants and more.Meerkats are highly social animals with complex communication skills. Families maintain close bonds and these ever-alert animals depend on one another for survival on the hostile African plains. Adults and young alike are highly inquisitive and playful.Though completely different species and a continent apart, many meerkat behaviors---particularly those of sentry duty and vocal communication---are strikingly similar to those of the North American black-tailed prairie dog.
Recent research suggests that meerkats aren't as happy and fuzzy as "Meerkat Manor" may have led you to believe. As a form of population control, alpha meerkats have been known to murder their own grandchildren. Might want to keep an eye on the little critters.
