Like tarantulas, all scorpions are venomous. Unlike tarantulas, scorpions deliver their venom via a stinger located on the last segment of the tail. A general rule of thumb with scorpions is that the fatter the tail and the smaller the pincers, the more likely the scorpion is to be dangerously venomous. A scorpion with large pincers and a thin tail is likely to have very weak venom, instead crushing its prey to death. The emperor scorpion, with its tiny tail and oversize pincers, is a prime example of this tendency; emperors have very weak venom and are much more likely to pinch than sting.Interestingly baby scorpions, called scorplings, are born live; female scorpions do not lay eggs. A mother scorpion will carry her young on her back for several weeks until the scorplings are able to fend for themselves. She will fight to the death defending her young during this period.
Like all scorpions, emperors will glow under a blacklight.
Scorpions in Literature
Scorpions have always represented danger and death. In the very first book we have, the Epic of Gilgamesh from around 2000 BCE, the entrance to the underworld is guarded by scorpion people. In the fable of the Scorpion and the Frog, a scorpion is unable to resist its nature.
