Four groups of drawing students have been learning how to SEE what is actually in front of them (spatial relationships, lines, forms and colors) versus filling in with SYMBOLS which they've been using for years to LOOK at their surroundings. Exercises such as upside down drawing, shading around the facial features versus drawing them with lines, and drawing without looking down are being used to turn down left-brain "helpfulness" which is not so helpful in observational drawing!
