At the end of Instructional Technology we had the most time consuming project we'd had thus far in our educational technology courses. We were charged with finding an educational iPad app and creating our own tutorial about how to use it. And it wasn't just the walk though. This tutorial is the whole nine yards. Not only does it contain a tutorial, it contains: our personal review, a list of features of the app, a detailed overview, and ways to integrate the app into the classroom. The tutorial is presented in keynote. This was one of the largest challenges. When using keynote most people are used to using it as a presentation tool. When using it as a presentation tool, you don't put a lot of words on each slide. But as this was a tutorial, and not a presentation, we needed to put all of our information all in the keynote. That meant typing out much more than we were used to.
For myself using Keynote and iMovie (for the two videos) were especially difficult. I do not own a Mac so I used the ones in the Education building. I had never used the software we were using before, so it took me longer than I was expecting to do the project. iMovie presented the biggest challenge of the two programs. iMovie was extremely difficult because I had to upload the videos from my iPad into iMovie before I could add them to my Keynote. I used iMovie for the most part to do my voice over for the tutorial part of my video. Once I finished importing both of my videos, I went into Keynote and used the media tab to insert them into the Keynote. Once they're inserted, it's so easy to re-size them and place them on your slide. When in presentation mode, the movies will start automatically when getting to the slide. From there it is as easy as creating a presentation. As much as I was frustrated I couldn't
use the software I was used to, I think that it ultimately was a great experience. I don't know if the school I will end up teaching at will have Macs or PCs so it was a good project for me to get used to using a Mac a little bit more. It makes my skill set just a little bit bigger.
The app that I picked is called Scribble Press. It was recommended to me while we were working at Montileu and I got to use it with my first grade student. He loved it. Since he was so young and was just learning how to write and spell, it was great because he only had to type maybe five words and then he was free to illustrate a book that he had written! After seeing this, I knew this was the app I wanted to do my tutorial on. I will definitely be using it in my classroom one day. I think it's a great way to mix academics with creativity which is something teachers are always looking for.
I hope you enjoy my tutorial!
