In addition to the standard Leadership and Collaboration Project, there was an added research component for me. I am a member of the Honor Scholar program at High Point University, and to fulfill my final honors contract, I completed a poster that was presented at the High Point University Graduate Research Poster Symposium held on April 2nd. Unfortunately, due to an additional research project that was being presented out of state, I was unable to attend the Symposium, but my poster and a hand-out were there in my place.
This research project included an IRB approved survey and data analysis to track how effective the activities were. This assisted me in evaluating myself and the activities that were used. I took the data I collected, and created my poster. In addition to my poster, I created a hand out for people at the Symposium who were interested in my research but couldn't ask any questions.
After a literature review, I also wrote a paper highlighting my process and results compared to similar studies.
I found that continued parental involvement leads to an increase in reading proficiency. In additional studies, it would be interesting to correlate parental involvement with running record performance for kindergarten as there is no standardized measure for kindergarten.
After doing my research, and writing my abstract, my poster was accepted to the symposium. I was disappointed that I could not be in attendance with my poster. However, my professor was nice enough to bring my poster over and told me that the symposium went well! I'm hopeful that my project was beneficial to those that participated and that research such as this can inform parents and teachers of the mutual responsibility they share.
