The class file uopthesis.cls

Attached at the bottom of this page is a zipped folder (directory) with a sample dissertation using the uopthesis.cls document class and the recommended preamble. This has evolved over 19 years for PhD (and other) submissions at Plymouth University but can be adapted for a great many other purposes.

The uopthesis.cls class file is a set of minor tweaks on the standard book class, so you can start off working with a standard class. However, the result of all the tweaks and the preamble file is quite complicated for a beginner. Don't be put off, just take your time and start with simple documents until you get a bit of confidence.

If you are a TeXStudio user (recommended, see here►) just unzip the whole directory somewhere and open the main.tex file.

Instructions

Download the zip file attached to this page
Unzip it somewhere in a working directory (I use a stick so I can carry it around)
Open the file main.tex using TeXStudio (the only editor I now recommend)
Compile it (press F5) to get a sample thesis - this takes a minute or two the first time you do it
Spend at least half an hour making sure you know how it works!
Start adding your own text and pictures slowly

Glossary Problem

The Nomenclature (or Glossary) section does not work from inside TeXstudio - still trying to fix this.

Look in the working directory for a file called makethegloss.bat and double click it, then compile again to create the glossary. This utility assumes that your thesis is still called main.tex - you will have to edit makethegloss.bat if you have called your file something else.

Significant Change 2015

All versions from 2_2 upwards will have the hyperref package active by default. This package turns citations and references in to hyperlinks. This is because PU has gone over to electronic submission. If you want to turn hyperref off for printing, or simply make the links black so you can't see them, you will have to do this in the preamble.
