CENSORSHIP BY THE CONVERSATION. Censorship by an Australian academic-based web magazine that is otherwise a welcome initiative in Murdochracy and Lobbyocracy Australia

The Conversation is a very welcome initiative in Australian media. It invites and publishes articles by academic scholars and other experts and invites reader comments. The reader comments are typically non-anonymous and often from professional people with relevant expertise.

Australia is a Murdochracy (Big Money buys public perception and hence votes) and a Lobbyocracy (Big Money buys public perceptions, politicians, parties, polices and votes). Accordingly The Conversation is very welcome in enabling expert opinions in a country woefully served by the grossly deficient reportage and censorship of oligopoly Mainstream media (see "Boycott Murdoch Media": https://sites.google.com/site/boycottmurdochmedia/ and “Censorship by The Age”: http://agecensors.blogspot.com/https://sites.google.com/site/mainstreammediacensorship/censorship-by-the-age and http://agecensors.blogspot.com/ ) and a woefully deficient , taxpayer-funded Australian Broadcasting Corporation (the ABC; Australia's equivalent of the UK taxpayer-funded BBC; see “ABC Censorship”: https://sites.google.com/site/abccensorship/home ).

Unfortunately I have already encountered many instances of censorship by The Conversation of comments posted by me. It is likely that this abuse goes much further than censorship of just one widely published, 5-decade career Australian scientist. I have a resolute mantra “Peace is the only way but silence kills and silence is complicity”. I would be complicit in such censorship if I remained silent. Accordingly I have created this website “Censorship by The Conversation” to systematically record such censorship in the interests of free speech, Australia, Humanity and indeed of The Conversation itself.

The censorship by The Conversation became so regular that it was more convenient for me and more useful as a historical record in the public interest to simply record what comments I have posted and then indicate Comments censored IN BOLD i.e. what the Conversation has censored out, presumably for containing things it does not want its readers to see, know about or think about.

However The Conversation has gone further than this - it has now also BLOCKED me from logging-in and participating in "The Conversation" by my original registration as "Dr Gideon Polya" (in 2012) and thence successively from logging in via Facebook, Twitter and Linked-In (in July 2013). There are thus no further comments that I can post on The Conversation to be censored and hence this experiment in determining what The Conversation does not want its readers to read, know about or think about seems to have come to an end. All that I can do is to continue informing all those associated with The Conversation, MPs, media, fellow academics, the Australian public and and people overseas about this egregious censorship that is utterly anathema to academics.

Censorship is utterly anathema to serious academics and students.There are some 250,000 overseas students currently at Australian universities in an industry worth $16 billion annually - why would such students waste their money attending universities connected to this egregious censorship by the Australian universities-backed web magazine The Conversation? The University of Melbourne has been repeatedly apprised of censorship by The Conversation but continues to back The Conversation - I have taken steps to document around the world censorship and linkage to censorship by the University of Melbourne (see Gideon Polya, “Academic censorship: why you should NOT study at the University of Melbourne”, Bellaciao, 5 November 2012: http://http.bellaciao.org/en/spip.php?article22283 ).

There is another disturbing element to this - The Conversation is clearly involved in censoring facts about the horrendous human consequences of US imperialism, Israeli Apartheid, US state terrorism, UK state terrorism, French state terrorism, Apartheid Israeli state terrorism, the Neocon American and Zionist Imperialist -promoted US War on Muslims (12 million Muslim deaths from violence or violently-imposed deprivation since 1990; see "Muslim Holocaust Muslim Genocide": https://sites.google.com/site/muslimholocaustmuslimgenocide/ ), corporate lying, corporatist media lying and climate criminal corporate and government policies (see "Climate Genocide": https://sites.google.com/site/climategenocide/ and “Are we doomed?”: https://sites.google.com/site/300orgsite/are-we-doomed ).

It is unacceptable that a taxpayer-funded medium such as The Conversation censors informed scholarly opinion about serious matters - this is unacceptable behaviour that is against the national interest while benefiting national and international war criminals and climate criminals. The Conversation compounds this inept and societally dangerous behaviour by intolerable sidelining, censoring , blocking and defamation in relation to anti-racist Jewish opinion in particular.

ON ABOUT ANZAC DAY, 25 APRIL 2012 I FOUND THAT MY ACCOUNT WITH "THE CONVERSATION" WAS "LOCKED" - it is still "locked" as of 14 January 2013 . IN RESPONSE TO MY QUERY I WAS SENT A LETTER ON 26 APRIL 2012 THAT STATED IN PART: “We have locked your account in response to your repeated violations of our Community Standards”.

This was the reply I sent to various parties involved with "The Conversation":

Re The Australian university–backed and academic-based The Conversation’s “We have locked your account in response to your repeated violations of our Community Standards”.

I have been collating instances in which I have been censored by The Conversation and it is clear that the common factor is my morally obligated criticism of genocidal atrocities by the US and Apartheid Israel (see “Censorship by The Conversation”: https://sites.google.com/site/mainstreammediacensorship/censorship-by ).

For anti-racist Jews and indeed all anti-racist humanitarians the core moral messages from the Jewish Holocaust (5-6 million dead, 1 in 6 dying from deprivation) and from the more general WW2 European Holocaust (30 million Slav, Jewish and Gypsy dead) are “zero tolerance for racism”, “never again to anyone”, “bear witness” and “zero tolerance for lying”.

However these sacred injunctions are grossly violated by the anti-Arab anti-Semitic racist Zionists running Apartheid Israel and their Western backers variously involved in the ongoing Palestinian Genocide, Iraqi Genocide, Somali Genocide, and Afghan Genocide (post-invasion violent and non-violent excess deaths 0.3 million (1967-2011), 4.6 million (1990-2012), 2.2 million (1992-2012) and 5.6 million (2001-2012), respectively; post-invasion under-5 infant deaths totalling 0.2 million, 2.0 million, 1.3 million and 2.9 million, respectively; refugees totalling 7 million, 5-6 million, 2 million and 3-4 million, respectively, plus a further 2.5 million Pashtun refugees displaced in NW Pakistan.

All decent, anti-racist humanitarians are obliged to expose and oppose racist Zionism, Apartheid Israel, the ongoing Palestinian Genocide (2 million Palestinian untimely deaths since 1936, 0.1 million from violence, 1.9 million from war-, occupation- and expulsion-related deprivation); racist US Alliance wars and occupations (12 million Muslim war-related deaths since 1990); continuing neoconservative and racist Zionist perversion of human rights, humanitarian values and rational discourse in the Western democracies; neocon-backed ignoring of worsening climate genocide (that may kill 10 billion non-Europeans this century through unaddressed man-made climate change); and egregious, racist Zionist-promoted anti-Jewish anti-Semitism through (1) sidelining anti-racist Jews, (2) censoring anti-racist Jews, (3) egregious, false defamation of anti-racist Jews critical of Apartheid Israel as “self-hating Jews” and “anti-Semites”, and (4) falsely identifying decent, anti-racist Jews with the appalling, genocidal crimes of Apartheid Israel and the Zionist-backed US Alliance.

I am inspired by Polish hero Jan Karski (later professor at Georgetown University, Washington DC) who tried to warn a disbelieving world about the Jewish Holocaust as it was happening; by numerous outstanding anti-racist Jewish scholars from Professor Hannah Arendt to Professor Howard Zinn (see “Jews Against Racist Zionism”: https://sites.google.com/site/jewsagainstracistzionism/home ) ; by numerous outstanding anti-racist non-Jews from Tariq Ali, Jimmy Carter and Günter Grass to Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu (see “Non-Jews Against Racist Zionism”: https://sites.google.com/site/nonjewsagainstracistzionism/tutu-desmond ); and by the words of outstanding Jewish American scholar Professor Jared Diamond who in his best-selling book "Collapse” (Prologue, p10, Penguin edition) enunciated the "moral principle, namely that it is morally wrong for one people to dispossess, subjugate, or exterminate another people" – an injunction grossly violated by racist Zionist (RZ)-run Apartheid Israel and its racist, genocide-committing and genocide-ignoring US Alliance backers who are complicit in the deaths of 12 million people from violence and war-imposed deprivation in the post-1990 US War on Muslims (see “Muslim Holocaust, Muslim Genocide”: https://sites.google.com/site/muslimholocaustmuslimgenocide/ ).

Only a dozen of my wider family survived the racist Zionist-complicit Jewish Holocaust in Hungary in 1944-1945 – the racist Zionists collaborated with the Nazis before and during the war and got Churchill to veto the Joel Brand plan to save 0.7 million Hungarian Jews. I am absolutely obliged to oppose any racism and also obliged to endorse the words of outstanding Jewish Canadian writer Naomi Klein “There is a debate among Jews - I'm a Jew by the way. The debate boils down to the question: "Never again to everyone, or never again to us?... As an anti-racist Australian I am cognizant of the humane opinion of Australia’s most eminent Jewish public figure, Sir Isaac Isaacs, the first Australian-born Governor-General: “The honour of Jews throughout the world demands the renunciation of political Zionism” (Sir Isaac Isaacs, quoted by Wikipedia, ”Isaac Isaacs”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Isaacs ).

I also agree with the expert opinion of Jewish Israeli Professor Avi Shlaim (Professor of International Relations at prestigious Oxford University, UK): “Establishing the state of Israel in May 1948 involved a monumental injustice to the Palestinians … review of Israel's record over the past four decades makes it difficult to resist the conclusion that it has become a rogue state with "an utterly unscrupulous set of leaders". A rogue state habitually violates international law, possesses weapons of mass destruction and practises terrorism - the use of violence against civilians for political purposes. Israel fulfils all of these three criteria; the cap fits and it must wear it. I will be raising this serious matter of censorship of credentialed, substantiated, documented academic opinion by an Australian university–backed and academic-based web magazine with the Board and backers of The Conversation, MPs, media and a wide audience here and abroad – it is not a good look and may well discourage overseas students from studying at the Australian universities linked with The Conversation or indeed at Australian universities in general.

Dear etc,

Open Letter to MPs, media & academia: Censorship and anti-Coalition and anti-Jewish defamation by the taxpayer-funded The Conversation and the ABC.

The iconic Australian Broadcasting Corporation (the ABC, Australia’s equivalent of the UK BBC) is taxpayer-funded ($929.9 million in the 2009-2010 Federal budget). Likewise, the academic–based, universities-backed web magazine The Conversation is taxpayer-funded with its key funders and backers including CSIRO, Melbourne, Monash, RMIT, University of Technology Sydney and the University of Western Australia (a further 13 universities also fund The Conversation). Yet both the ABC and The Conversation betray the public trust through gross malreportage, censorship, Gillard Labor bias and defamation of both the Coalition and of anti-racist Jewish opinion.

Thus searches of the ABC for the terms “Abbott is a misogynist” and “mad monk” (both false assertions applied to the Leader of the Opposition) yield 7 and 90 instances, respectively, and searches of The Conversation yield 42 and 15 instances, respectively. Implicit in such abuse is the false implication that conservative Catholic women and the majority of Australian women currently giving 2-party-preferred support to the Coalition are “self-hating women” and “mad”.

Searches of the ABC and The Conversation for “Lord Monckton” (a non-scientist climate change denialist) yield 171 and 48 instances, respectively, whereas searches for “Peter Wadhams” (the Cambridge University Ocean Physics professor who estimates that all Arctic summer sea ice will disappear by 2015) yield only 1 report each, and searches for “Peter Seligman” (the University of Melbourne professor, top bionic ear electrical engineer and author of the key renewable energy book “Australian Sustainable Energy – by the numbers”) yield zero (0) reportage.

Both the ABC and The Conversation have an appalling, continuing record that variously involves sidelining, blocking, censoring and unretracted publication of defamation in response to anti-racist Jewish opinion critical of human rights abuses in the Middle East and elsewhere. The obligatory responses of all anti-racist Jews, and indeed of all anti-racists in general, to the WW2 Holocaust (30 million Slavs, Jews and Gypsies killed) are “bear witness” and “never again to anyone”. Repeated defamation of decent anti-racist Jews defending Palestinian, Arab, or Muslim human rights as unbalanced, Nazi-like, racists, anti-Semites or self-hating Jews is utterly repugnant and unforgivable and can be seen as symptomatic of a new kind of anti-Jewish anti-Semitism directed at anti-racist Jews.

A 5-decade career scientist still teaching at a good Australian university and committed to informing my fellow citizens about gross abuses of humanity and the environment, I have been variously sidelined, blocked, censored and defamed by both the ABC and The Conversation. Representations to ACMA and the ABC, and to The Conversation and its key institutional backers have proved sterile. Freedom of speech is sacrosanct but censorship in general - and censorship and defamation of an anti-racist Jewish minority in particular - should not be subsidized by the taxpayer. I am resolute in my opposition to these abuses as the son of a pre-WW2 Jewish refugee to Australia. Unfortunately, racist Zionist-beholden Labor firmly backs those doing the censoring and abusing of anti-racist Jews, ignoring the humanitarian stance of outstanding anti-racist Australian Jews from Sir Isaac Isaacs (Australia’s first Australian-born Governor General) to Professors Peter Singer, Dennis Altman and Eva Cox (Google “Jews Against Racist Zionism”).

Labor has now slashed university research grants (this cutting $500 million over 4 years) and is rushing (against Green and Coalition objections) to get the Senate to pass the Defence Trade Controls Bill (2011) which, according to Universities Australia (representing 39 Australian universities), “As currently drafted will significantly impact the training and research conducted by universities” and will interfere with the 3 key university purposes of teaching, research and informing the public. Universities committed to or subject to censorship are unfit for students, including the over 240,000 full fee-paying overseas students crucial to Australia’s $16 billion pa education export industry.

Of course censorship in general is inimical to rational risk management that is crucial for societal safety. Thus, for example, the ignored estimated accrual cost to Australia of the War on Terror and the Iraq and Afghan Wars (associated so far with an ignored 9 million Muslim deaths from violence or war-imposed deprivation) is $125 billion, an ignored, huge commitment that could have been spent on education, health and on saving the lives of sick Australians, an ignored 66,000 of whom die preventably each year under Labor, 9,000 being Indigenous Australians.*

Universities apprised of censorship and defamation by The Conversation must withdraw any financial support subject to its reformation. The University of Melbourne is arguably Australia’s top university but funds The Conversation, has failed to act on my complaints, has otherwise a very poor record of censorship, and should face national and international exposure and sanctions in the interests of its staff and students, Australia and higher education. I also suggest that targeted cuts in taxpayer funding will make the ABC conduct itself decently.in the public interest. I have never voted for the Coalition but can never vote for a neoliberal New Labor that continues to betray and shame decent Labor voters – I accordingly also recommend that pro-peace, pro-environment, pro-education, pro-science and pro-equity people vote 1 Green and put Labor last until it reverts to decent, humanitarian values.

Silence is complicity. This has been written in the public interest.

Open Letter to the taxpayer-funded Australian ABC re ABC betrayal, censoring, lying by omission , lying by commission, genocide-ignoring, anti-Arab anti-Semitism and anti-Jewish anti-Semitism.

(30 Its dismissal of the example of Jews fleeing the Nazis is deeply offending to me - my father and an uncle found haven in Australia in 1939 but all but about a dozen of my family perished in the Jewish Holocaust in Hungary (1944-1945). Australia admitted 9,000 Jewish refugees in the period 1933-1945 but in thsi same period Jewish refugees were blocked from entry to New Zealand, India, British East Africa, some South American countries and from South Africa (1936-1945) (cf total prohibition of asylum seekers by boat from Australia by Rudd Labor) (see Professor Martin Gilbert, The search for safety 1933-1945, "Jewish History Atlas", p90).

Well said, Marilyn Shepherd. Would that there were more decent , humane people like you in Australia. Neoliberal Rudd Labor's immoral and illegal bottom-of-the-barrel policy is to treat refugee men, women and children sufficiently badly that it will "stop the boats". For decent people the moral position is clear and unequivocal - we must receive and treat refugees decently.

However there is also a legal issue, noting that decent people behave morally and also obey the law. Here is the expert opinion of Professor Dr Michelle Foster (an Associate Professor and Director of the International Refugee Law Research Programme in the Institute for International Law and the Humanities at Melbourne Law School, her teaching and research interests are in the areas of public law, international refugee law, and international human rights law, she has LLM and SJD degrees from the University of Michigan Law School, where she was a Michigan Grotius Fellow, and she also holds an LLB and BComm from the University of New South Wales): "I think this policy is in clear violation of international law. I think we need to be absolutely clear about that and I have got really three key concerns but I will go straight to your concern, Article 33 of the Refugees' Convention is clearly the core obligation and it basically says we cannot return or transfer an asylum seeker or a refugee to a place where they fear persecution. Now, there are good reasons to fear that certain categories of asylum seekers would directly fear persecution in Papua New Guinea. You have touched on exactly the issue. In fact, the Government hasn't mentioned that we actually grant refugee status to women fleeing domestic violence and sexual violence in Papua New Guinea. The numbers aren't high but there is several decisions even in the last year of the Refugee Review Tribunal recognising women from Papua New Guinea. So this is a refugee-producing company that we’re thinking of sending women, homosexual people, potentially children as well to. So there’s key concerns there. The other issue is not only that we have to be concerned that we are not sending people to a place of persecution, we also have to make sure that that place won't, in turn, send people back home. And, I mean, Bill Shorten just touched on the issue of processing. It is incumbent upon Australia to ensure that if people are sent to Papua New Guinea, there is an adequate system of refugee status determination because if the system is flawed and people are not adequately processed, they will be sent home in violation of international law. Now, the problem is Papua New Guinea has absolutely no track record in refugee status determination. In fact, until January this year there wasn't even any legislation about refugees. There is now legislation but the UN High Commissioner for refugees has said that it’s in violation of international law. 7. Iraqi Genocide (4.6 million deaths, 1990-2011, 2.0 million under-5 infant deaths, 5-6 million refugees generated).
