Juneteenth National Freedom Day is an important holiday for all Iowans to observe. In 2002, then Governor Tom Vilsack signed legislation making Juneteenth an official state observance to be held annually in Iowa on the third Saturday in June. Historically it celebrates the end of legalized human slavery in this Country. In today’s world or more specifically for us here in Iowa City I would like to see the day used to create dialogues, alliances-- a day where we engage one another on what are the necessary foundations for a stronger community. Of course I would also want the day to be used as a time to reconcile, reflect and reconnect with family and friends. To this end, the City of Iowa City Recreational Services, Police Department, Fire Department and Human Rights Department will all be participating in the Juneteenth Celebration being held here in Iowa City at Mercer Park (2701 Bradford Drive) on June 16th from 12 pm – 6 pm. I would encourage all to attend and observe this very important day.
