The official Iowa State holiday of Juneteenth http://www.legis.iowa.gov/DOCS/ACO/IC/LINC/Section.1c.14.pdf is next month. Check out the May 2011 Issue of MaGaZiNe yEtU for back ground and history of this great holiday. It is not only an Iowa holiday, just for Iowans, it actually began in Texas and spread to many places. Celebrations are held in the surrounding areas of Cedar Rapids, Iowa - U.S.A., Waterloo, Iowa - U.S.A., Des Moines, Iowa - U.S.A., and Omaha, Nebraska - U.S.A. Branstad to comply with the law and issue a proclamation regarding honoring Juneteenth by "authorize[d] and requested to issue annually a proclamation designating the third Saturday in June as Juneteenth National Freedom Day and to encourage all governmental entities, civic organizations, schools, and institutions of higher education in the state to observe the day in a manner that emphasizes the meaning and importance of the emancipation proclamation that ended slavery in the United States and to recognize and celebrate the importance of this day" then please follow this link to submit your request to their office. https://governor.iowa.gov/constituent-services/proclamation-request/ If you don't use that link, they will decline to honor your request in that matter.
