BKHWD is a non-profit organization founded by citizens interested in strengthening the sense of community within the increasingly diverse population of Cedar Rapids.

We intend to build a minority community radio station devoted to forming connections with local community groups and organizations. These partnerships will create greater opportunities for youth development. There will be opportunities to learn broadcasting communications, engineering, and business management. However, first, we must get on the air and begin to reach out to the minority community by providing culturally specific media options that are not currently available.

We have also designed a program called the Youth Arcade Project (YAP). It is intended to fill the need for positive programs for at-risk youth and other minority teenagers in the area. The YAP is needed because it offers a place for our teens to go and be a part of something healthy and positive. The minority population in Cedar Rapids, though small, has grown steadily over the past years. It is now over 5%, and it continues to grow. There are few programs that cater to this segment that are low in cost and provide a positive environment with adult supervision. The Youth Arcade Project will fill this need, and will be free for all youth in Linn county.
