Subject: Million Hoodie March in Iowa City, 3/26/1

I am writing to let you know about a rally being planned for this coming Monday, 3/26/12, to mourn and protest the killing of Trayvon Martin (see details below).

Background: Trayvon Martin, a 17 year old African American young man, was shot and killed by George Zimmerman on February 26th in Sanford, Florida as he walked home from a store. Zimmerman, a self-appointed “neighborhood watch leader,” called 911 to report a “suspicious” person when he saw Trayvon wearing a hooded sweatshirt and carrying something in his hand, which turned out to be a bag of candy. Zimmerman, who was carrying a gun, called 911 to report the “suspicious” person. He was told by Dispatch not to follow Trayvon and not to get out of the car; the recording of the 911 call heard Zimmerman call Trayvon a racial slur and other abusive words while continuing in pursuit of the young man. After the shooting, Zimmerman was questioned and released by the Sanford Police Department, with no charges filed. Marches and vigils are being held across the country to mourn the loss of this young man, to demand justice in his killing, and to honor his memory by committing to end the widespread practice of racial profiling of communities of color – in Trayvon’s case, for simply “walking while Black.”

Iowa City Event: Iowa City’s “Million Hoodie March for Trayvon Martin” will be held on Monday, March 26th, 6:30 p.m. on the Iowa City Pedestrian Mall (on the fountain stage). Participants are asked to wear hoodies in solidarity for justice for Trayvon against racial profiling. The rally will feature speakers and time for open mic sharing. Community members outraged by this incident are also encouraged to sign an online national petition sponsored by Change.org: http://www.change.org/petitions/prosecute-the-killer-of-our-son-17-year-old-trayvon-martin For more information: Iowa City’s “Million Hoodie March for Trayvon Martin” is being organized by a local coalition of concerned individuals.
