Day One - 2016

Post date: Jul 16, 2016 7:58:27 PM

Halfway through day two, here is the update on Day One. Lola, just like last year, is a people pleaser. Everybody wants to look at or take a photo of her or tell a story about an old Valiant they used to have. As the only girl at Young Guns, there is a good chance that I have met at least 70% of the other Young Gun participants. Needless to say, Lola is not only chick magnet, but also a dude magnet.

There are not many parts that we need to find for Lola at this point, but two of them are only cosmetic. Yesterday, we found one! While taking to an alternator man on Thursday, I spotted a new steering wheel in the booth behind his. Yesterday we returned to that booth and picked up Lola's new wheel and horn, the new one being crack free.

The Daisy Duke contest is happening again this year and once again I will be in attendance. Yesterday I signed up and picked up my questionnaire. (The questions were fairly similar to last years)

Lisa and I headed over to the show early this morning with Shaelyn to help with set up. We have a sun tent we bought for the show last year and a few chairs - to get us out of the sun and a place to sit. Shaelyn is in the "Young Guns" class this year. They showcase the younger folks separate from the rest of the showfield - right near the main grandstand.

Had tons of folks stopping by/taking pictures, asking about the car, and telling their Valiant stories. Also had a number of folks we met last year when Shaelyn was over in the general showfield stop by and say hello.

One interesting couple - Ronny & Deborah - "The Coconuts" - spent a bunch of time talking with us. He is a power user member of the Slant 6 Forum (online user group) that specializes in providing an online resource for folks with Slant 6 engines. This website was a great resource for us in the rebuild (we joined). Ronny gave us some great info and tips, including information we were seeking on Sure Grip rear - ends (provide limited slip or 2 wheel drive in bad traction situations - see the court room scene in the movie "My Cousin Vinny" for a fun explanation).

Shaelyn had a constant stream of "admirers". Some were from her fellow Young Guns, others were interested in meeting a young girl (there are few at the show) that was interested in restoring old cars.

Great day ... we are proud parents.
