Some people require braces to improve their lifestyle or to simply correct the alignment of their teeth. Having braces is a long process that eventually pays off with a pleasing set of teeth. However, keeping braces on means regular maintenance and routine visits to the dentist. And in the period where one has braces, certain foods are just a pain to eat. Not only are they hard to brush off, but they can also lead to dental plaque. If you have braces or are planning on getting one, here are some food you should avoid eating.

Among the many things one can put in their mouth while having braces, chewing gum should be the last on the list. Chewing gum is a nightmare to remove, and the sugar can contribute much in plaque build-up. Sticky sweets like caramel, toffee, lollipops, hard candy and the sort should also be avoided. If they get stuck in between the crevices of your braces, these food particles could loosen or break them. Likewise, hard foods such as nuts, hard biscuits, and ice cubes have the potential to damage or loosen your braces.

Lastly, bony meats such as ribs or chicken wings should be eaten with caution. It would be best to cut the meat away from the bone before eating them as contact with these hard surfaces may damage or remove parts of the braces.
