Just How Important Is It To Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day?

We’ve all seen those gross commercials and pictures in magazines and online of what happens when one neglects brushing his or her teeth. Not only do millions of bacteria get stuck in our teeth in the form of plaque: not brushing also leads to the breakdown of the enamel, cavities, and eventual loss of our teeth.

Brushing at least twice a day should be treated as vital as eating. It’s a healthy habit that maintains fresh breath, removes teeth stains, and prevents gum disease.

Skipping the routine of brushing twice and not complementing it with flossing can lead to gingivitis, the early form of what dentists call periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is manifested in the chronic swelling and even bleeding of the gums.

Perhaps more important than preventing gum disease is that brushing teeth twice daily greatly reduces the risks of stroke or a heart attack. Keep in mind that the bacteria that build up in our mouth can travel to the bloodstream, which in turn leads to cholesterol build-up in our arteries.

Finally, remember the saying: an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. Brushing our teeth significantly reduces prospects of high dental bills in the future. Let’s commit to this overall healthy ritual. And get to smile more confidently, too.
