Indian President Pratibha Patil will tomorrow confer an award on Regency Medical Centre chairman Dr Rajni Kanabar at the eighth Indian Diaspora Conference, which kicked off in the Indian capital, New Delhi, yesterday.

President Patil is expected to deliver an address before conferring the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards 2010 on distinguished members of the Indian diaspora, including Dr Kanabar.

A statement issued yesterday by the Indian High Commission in Dar e Salaam said Dr Kanabar would be receiving this honour from the Indian president on January 9 (tomorrow).

Dr Kanabar becomes the second Tanzanian to receive the coveted award after Sir Andy Chande, according to the statement...

“Dr. Kanabar has been in the forefront of healthcare projects that have strengthened Indo-Tanzanian cooperation in the health sector. Medical tourism from Tanzania to India is an important aspect of this partnership,” it added.

It said further that Dr. Kanabar had made tremendous achievements in facilitating the treatment of Tanzanian infants suffering from heart ailments at Narayana Hrudayalaya Institute in Bangalore, adding that he had so far sponsored the treatment of over 2,000 Tanzanian children in India.

The Indian Diaspora Conference, also known as the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, commenced yesterday in New Delhi and was expected to end tomorrow.

It has been organized by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs and the Confederation of Indian Industry and has been held in New Delhi, after a gap of one year, for the fifth time.

“In keeping with established practice, the convention will be inaugurated by Dr Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India, on 8 January (today),” the statement said.

The conference provides a platform for exchange of views and networking for persons of Indian origin settled all over the world on matters of common interest and concern to them.
