According to HPL Policy (2.3.B.2.), "Children under the ages of six may not be left unattended at any time and children between the ages of seven and twelve should not be left unattended for more than one hour or left unattended at closing time.
Children “habitually left unattended” also violate the policy.
If there is a situation that violates the above guidelines, library staff should attempt to contact a parent, guardian, or caregiver.
If unable to contact parents or guardians or if the case is severe, it may become necessary to contact one of the following:
Houston Police Department
Call the non-emergency number at 713-884-3131
If it is an emergency, call 911 immediately
Child Protective Services
If needed, call 1-800-252-5400 (24 hour line)
Certain branches may have alternate contacts depending on location. Contact your immediate supervisor for information regarding your branch.
For unattended children left after the library has closed, see Unattended Children After Closing.
