1. HPL Orientation For all new employees; contact Contact HPL Training at 31675 for information.
2. City of Houston Benefits Orientation All new employees, part-time as well as full-time, must attend City of Houston orientation. For full-time employees, this will include an explanation of benefits and the opportunity to enroll in the health insurance plan, deferred compensation, and for other insurance options. Human Resources will call the employee with the date, time, and place of the orientation.
3. Materials Selection Workshop For employees involved in materials ordering; contact the Office of Materials Selection at 31469 for the Materials Selection Workshop schedule. Individual training will also be available.
4. Defensive Driving For all employees who will use a car for HPL business, e.g., picking up supplies during business hours, driving to Central from a branch or from Central to a branch or between branches. This training must be renewed every three years.
5. Other Required Trainings For Managers and Supervisors Your Team Leader can let you know what other trainings you will be required to take.

Staff training and development is give a high level of importance at the Houston Public Library. All HPL employees are required to take training that includes technology training; the number of hours required varies according to job classification. Staff are encouraged to go beyond the required training. Managers are responsible for ensuring that the staff members they supervise meet the required training expectations . HPL Training sends out emails with information about up-coming training opportunities.
