Letters and Personal Writings

June 15, 1959 [1]

My darling three cats,

I was very happy to hear from you all. I hope that Ralphy can read you this letter, so that he can tell you how much I miss you all. Just last night I had a long talk with your three beds and they said: "What is going on? Nobody is hopping on or springs. Don't the kids like us any more ? Sure, our backs hurt, when they jump around too much - but now we have no company and that is, bad, " And the bath tub. answered: " Glurb, glurb -I'm mighty dry lately. That. fat old man comes and takes a quick shower, but he doesn't even take the time to say hello to me. I like those kids who have long talks with me in my very own splash language," And then the toys spoke up and complained bitterly that nobody even looked at them, but then the crayons and the clay began to whisper to each other: " Hey,red, green, black and blue! Have you seen Nono and Shirley too ?

And one of them answered; " I think they went on a very long trip - I saw them pack a little grip.

And the grey ball, he went along
Why didn't I ? I'm just as strong - that's what the white ball said and he was quite sad.

But the doll bed and the doll carriage told them all to be quiet, because the dollies had fallen asleep, as soon as Shirley and Nono had left the house, and would not wake up until both came back and gave them a big kiss. But the rocking horse suddenly started to rock and shouted:

Tell me where the children are
Be it near or be it far
I shall ride until I find them
I Cannot be too far behind them
When I see bear, cat and mouse
I'll bring them back to our house.

At this, he began to rock so wildly that he suddenly rose and flew out of the window - and may be , if you look out of your window and watch the sky , maybe - maybe you'll see the rocking horse come flying along, provided he went off into the right direction.

But that's how much everybody here misses you and thinks of you. Love and kisses

Daddy
