Vally Mayer nee Silbermann

Undated, but I think in Uhersky Brod

Dad's Memoirs:

Father [Eugene Silbermann] had two sisters, an older one by the name of Vally and a younger one, Toni.

Vally married Arnold Mayer who lived in a very small town in Czechoslovakia - which at the time of their marriage was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The name of the place was then Ungarisch Brod. After WW I the Czech designation was Uhersky Brod. It was located in the Moravian part of Czechoslovakia. They had three sons - Franz, Walter and Kurt. The youngest died before I was born - I believe of scarlet fever. I got my middle name in his memory..' Both Franz and Walter were much older than I, but we were quite close. My uncle Arnold died not too long after WW I and I barely remember him. He was a merchant dealing in oak bark, a material used for tanning. Franz married in his late thirties. Wife's name was Gerti. They had a daughter named Eva who lives in Israel. Unfortunately we have had no contact. The whole family was sent to Theresienstadt by the Nazis. Aunt Vally died there. Franz perished as a slave laborer. Walter, Gerti and Eva returned to Uharsky Brod after the liberation. Apparently Walter never got over the experience and committed suicide within a year. It seems that he got married in Theresienstadt and his wife and child died there. Gerti and Eva eventually made their way to Palestine. We corresponded for some time, but then her letters stopped coming. She had remarried, but she was also ailing and must have died. Nobody ever let us know what happened.

Research notes

Comment: I realized belatedly that sometimes I forgot to note the source of an image I copied, but I hope to clean those up.

Uhersky Bord:

Source: YIVO Encycolopedia of Jews in Eastern Europe:

"There were 489 Jews in Uherský Brod in 1939. In 1941, Felix Brunn, the head of the community, and seven other members were executed based on charges of anti-German activities. In the same year, local fascists burned down the main synagogue. In August 1942, 350 Jews were brought to Uherský Brod from Uherské Hradištĕ; the former became an assembly point on the way to Terezín and Auschwitz. A total of 2,837 Jews were deported from Uherský Brod, of whom 81 survived the war. Thirty Jews returned after the war, and the community was reestablished in 1949. A year later 20 Jews immigrated to Israel, with the remaining Jews served by the nearby Kyjov Jewish community."

Comment: Dad's notes don't say that Walter was transported from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz, but apparently he was one of 2,503 deportees on May 5, 1944.

Theresienstadt records:

Sources: U.S. Holocaust Museum, List of people in who were deported to Theresienstadt (Oct. 5, 1944) and Persons imprisoned in Theresienstadt with surnames beginning with M (Mar. 1945)

Comments: Franz is listed with a birthdate of 1898 instead of the 1905 I have from Dad. Neither Walter nor Vally is listed, which would correspond with the information above.

Arnold Mayer and Walter Mayer grave:

Comment: Dates both agree with Dad's notes.

Graves (presumably at New Jewish Cemetery)

Uhersky Brod memorial:

According to the website for the "new" Jewish cemetery, "[t]he interior of the ceremonial hall, which dates back to 1906, is covered in plaques with the names of victims of the holocaust, unveiled in 1948. The hall also houses a permanent exhibition on the history of Uherský Brod’s Jewish community."

Comments: Same issue as above. Is this Aunt Vally? Also, note that Franz is not listed.
