COLUMBIA, Mo., Oct. 6 - Dr, Henry K. Silberman, clinical director of the Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center and associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Missouri here, has been awarded the Legion of Merit by President Lyndon B. Johnson.

The medal was awarded to Dr. Silberman for his service as assistant chief and chief of the psychiatry service .at Walter Reed General Hospital, Washington, D. C., from Aug. 1959 to Aug. 1965. Dr. William H. Anderson, superintendent of the Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center and associate professor of psychiatry at the University, made the presentation as a representative of the Department of the Army in a recent ceremony in the University Medical Center. Dr. Anderson is a retired colonel in the U. S. Army.

Dr. Silberman joined the staff of the University of Missouri here on Sept. 1, 1965, following his retirement from the U. S. Army with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He was born in Breslau, Germany, and studied medicine in Italy before immigrating to the United States in' May, 1940. Dr. Silberman served with the U. S. Army during World War II and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the field in 1945.

Dr. Silberman was graduated frbm the New York Univers ity School of Medicine in 1950 and served his internship at Montefiore Hospital, New York City. He re- entered active duty in the Army in 1950 and served as a neuropsychiatrist at the U. S. Army Hospital at Camp Edwards, Mass., in l951-52. From 1952-55, Dr. Silberman was a resident psychiatrist at Fitzsimmons General Hospital, Denver, Colo.

He was graduated from the University of Colorado in June of 1955 with an M.S. degree in psychiatry. He served as chief of the Open Section and Psychiatric-0utpatient Service at Fitzsimmons Ho spital from 1955-56 and from 1956-59 as chief of the NP Service at the U.S. Army Hospital in Bad Cannstatt, Germany. He then began his duties as assistant chief and then chief o£ the psychiatry service at Walter Reed Hospital.

Dr. Silberman was named a Fellow in the American Psychiatric Association in May, 1961, and since 1963 has served as a member of the American Psychiatric Association Committee on Mental Hospitals. He was associate clinical professor at Georgetown University School of Nursing, Washington, D.C., from 1963 until his appointment to the staff of the University of Missouri here.

Dr. Silberman was married to the former Janina J. Jonas of Manchester, England, in Oct., 1950. They have three children: Ralph, 14, a ninth grade student at West Junior High School; Shirley, 11, a sixth grade student at Russell Boulevard School; and Eleanor, 10, a fifth grade student at Russell Boulevard School.
