[Handwritten by grandmother]

Dear Heinz!

Yesterday was your birthday, when Alice came to spend the evening with us in thoughts of you. We had Alice's favourite dish porterhouse steak with a bottle of Sauterne we have drunk to your health. But our joy was somewhat overshadowed by the setback in Belgium as you will have felt too.[1] But we hope the front will be reestablished soon although the final of the struggle be delayed. Should you be chance come to Brussels or in another way, please try to inquire after Miss Steffi Waerroviski [sp?] about eighteen years old, who had been sent six years ago with a transport to Belgium. Her last address was 34 Rue de Patriotes Brussels. I repeat the name as not written distinctly above Steffi Wierusrovski, she is related with Frank Liegnitz and Dr Lohenrin whom you may know as friends of Franz Apt. We are sorry you did not receive but two parcels and hope that of the five we have sent some more will have been delivered to you. We got a very good parcel from Georg and Erna Levy from Florida with Oranges and Grapefruits of such a fine quality as we never had before in New York. I wish you a very good New Year and remain in love your mother.

Best wishes for the New Year in love your father.

  1. Little did she know then how big the Bulge was part of Dad's story.
