Dear Heinz,

Letters from you are quicker and regularly forwarded lately. Today we received one of November 15th, certainly not as quickly as some months ago, when delivered within less than one week. You can expect mother making Schlesisches Himmelrelch[1] at your first dinner returned from Europe we enjoyed here already. Such kind of specialties are no problems here, what one cannot get in the neigbourhood, it is to be had in Yorkville[2] where from we got Kasseler Rippenspeer[3] too after more than 5 years again.

I have sent you 3 packages by mail post within the last days(containing each 40 cigarettes which will b followed by another to-morrow. From now I shall mark them (that of to-morrow No.4) to have a control. Between I shall let you have Edgeworth pipe tobacco I am smoking too occasionally which may be welcomed too by people. I am not in possession of your reply, if you want to get the Macy tobacco for your use or to stop.[4]

Inge Levy[5] is a nice girl and living again in Miami with her parents. Miss Bry[6] has been living in our apartment house before we moved in at her suggestion to Alice. She asks us to give sou message that she is not only fellow tenant in the house but your foster sister, as mother took care of her, when lately she was suffering from flu. Besides, occasionally, not always, when Alice is on visit with us, she shares our dinner but pays for it our selfooats,[?] She would have liked to have her dinner meal every day, but we could not comply from different reasons with such wish of hers.

The parcel you have sent has not yet been delivered to us. If sent as parcel, it may take 6-8 weeks.

Besides the parcel for Christmas you have acknowledged receipt the next should be already in your possession. Be careful not to eat the salami sausage, if you have any doubt.

We wonder there is already snow, as rule we did not have before Christmas. Should you get skis, be careful, as you did not have any practice since years. We assume you are forbidden to write where you are, if in Belgium or German territory. By any means while in France in Belgium you had a good opportunity to refresh your French.

To-day is a really nasty weather. I đid not leave the room the whole day, but shall have to do giving the lesson in the evening. Do people speak Flemish where you are?

Notes:

1. "Silesian Heaven"--pork dish with dried fruits. Rates entry in German Wikipedia. And here's a recipe (although with pork tenderloin, not pork belly). [Will need to see if I can find this in Marta's recipes.] Don't remember Mom making this specifically, but do remember her cooking with dried fruit.

2. Wasn't familiar with Yorkville, but apparently an upper East Side neighborhood: "On 86th Street, in the central portion of Yorkville, there were many German shops, restaurants and bakeries. Yorkville became the melting pot of populations arriving from various regions of the Prussian-dominated German Empire and its colonies, where many cultures spoke German. In the 1930s, the neighborhood was the home base of Fritz Julius Kuhn's German American Bund, the most notorious pro-Nazi group in 1930s United States, which led to spontaneous protests by other residents. Yorkville was a haven for refugees from Nazi Germany in the 1940s"

3. German roasted smoked pork loin. Not sure I have seen smoked pork loin anywhere, but believe I remember Mom having smoked pork chops. Here's a recipe.

4. Wonder if some of the tobacco was for other purposes than Dad's use. [See letter of December 28 for more about tobacco.[

5. Dad's second cousin (on the Berger side).
