Letter No. 29

Dear Heinz,

In agreement with Alice I have sent to you yesterday 1 package containing two boxes of cigarettes you have asked for and another will follow tomorrow. I shall let you have 1- to 2- packages each week which should be of good use to you. Please let us know if pipe tobacco is wanted by you of which about 7 packages have been sent since stoppiing.

We received two letters from you lately, we have been much interested to read the contents of which in accordance with what has been published in newspapers and not to be expected otherwise, It agrees with a sentence out of a book (Diagnosis of our time by Karl Mannheim[1]): "People who are conditioned to accept values blindly either through obedience imitation or emotional suggestions will hardly be able to cope with those values that appeal to reason ..." It would be futile to argue with a nazi about Nietzsche whose Mergonte fröhlicher Wissenschaft[2] he may have hardly read neither any other books of Nietzsche, who passed condemning judgments about Germany and extolls Judaism. One need not agree with his ideas of Uebermensch, but it would be offensive of his to be claimed as predecessor or glorifying anything in connection with nazisocialism. As distorted as Nietzsche may be lectured at the universities the truth of events and the past of their Führer is idealized. They do not learn to know that the national hero Horst Wessel[3] never has been killed by a communist but has been a "Zuhälter" and shot by a colleague whose "bride" complained of the competition of Wesel's "bride" not registered at the police, They are sure not to know anything about Goerlng's Reischtagbrand at Hitler's suggestion committing perjury with Goebbels at the Reichsgerlcht.

Since a few days weather has deteriorated, rain, more cold but as we enjoy a warm room we are not suffering as did in England.

In love

[Handwritten] Your father

[Handwritten] Lots of love mother

Notes:

  1. According to this review, the book had just been published in October,

  2. Appears to be two separate works, translated as "The Dawn" and "The Happy Science."

  3. Horst Wessel was an assault leader killed in 1930 and made a martyr by Goebbels.
