Letter No:2.

Dear Heinz,

Receiving your letter of December 31st we are very sorry to learn to know that none of the birthday letters the first of which mother wrote December 2nd has been delivered to you. As written before we have spent the đay with Alice. Since you asked for lately we have sent you twice each time 2 packs of pipe tobacco by mail and January 9th, a parcel containing about 1/2 a pound of pipe tobacco, one glass of olives, figs, apricots, raisins and 2 larger combs than those we added to the tobacco packs, Do you require any hair pomade[1]? As I could not get it here neither in England, I used to get it made myself in a good quality.

These đays sad news arrived that Dr. Goldstein has died after sufferances of several months from endocarditis, Sad it be, he has enjoyed 6 years living with his family in Australia.

To Dr. Libman we sent compliments of the season at the New Year, but we did not hear anything from him since we saw him after our arrival in New York. Then he was very kind offering a help should we require. But as we could do without, we thanked but declined and acted in your intention. A few weeks hereafter Alice meeting Dr. Biehle has been told that L. spoke with him about giving us an allowance, but we did not hear anything. Really we can do without, as we live on a far better standard than in England by what mother and I are earning with exception of the rent of the room we pay of the allowance and save the rest in case of future needs. But we cannot rely on the home job for all times to come, as it nay stop, if orders are lacking.

I đo not remember the correspondence of a special dentist in Belgium, as I really always have been in some way in connections with colleagues Ín foreign countries.

Do not forget to mention things you wish to get sent in your letters--it may be anything as we have only to show a letter of request at the postoffice. The next parcel we shall send, as soon we get the new address in connection with the promotion you are facing.

Do you regularly receive the Sunday edition of the New York Times? When writing the war will be at an end when the last nazi will be killed, may I reply and add that eternal peace will be secured when people will discard from materialism and build up a world based on righteousness and free from selfishness, love of power after being freed from the nazi gangsters.

In love,

[Handwritten] Your father

From Luz Hamburger we, got a very good photo Grete H. has taken of us. It will be enlarged and sent to you next week.[2]

[Handwritten] Many kisses lots of love your mother

Notes:

  1. Hair pomade! So this article does say that it was big in Europe (and aristocratic circles) especially in the 1930s.

  2. Presumably the photograph taken on
