What were they thinking?
Paul wrote: “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3: 20-21)
We mostly know what we ask of the Lord, but many times we are not fully aware of what we are thinking. Let us take some examples from the Scriptures: as the people of Israel were departing Egypt, they got to a point where Pharaoh and his army were right behind them, and ahead of them was the Red Sea. They turned to Moses (the one leader they could actually see) and said: "Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? ....” (Exodus 14:11). Later on, when the same people of Israel were confronted and challenged by Goliath, we find their response in I Samuel 17:11: “When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid”.
In the New Testament we find similar situations, where people, lacking understanding and faith, underestimate the power and plans of God. At the crucifixion of the Lord, when so many expected that Jesus was going to deliver them from the power of Rome, or that He would get out of the cross alive, how much disappointment did they have in their hearts and minds? How much sadness we find in the two men on the way to Emmaus…. (Luke 24: 13-35).
These, and many others, are clear examples of human being’s weaknesses and limitations. What did Paul mean, when he said “…according to the power that works within us…”? Does the power of God vary? Does it have “highs and lows”? We all know the answer to these questions. The power of the Lord works within us according to the faith that we have in God through Jesus Christ, and the understanding of this relationship between us and the Creator.
Faith is the work of the Holy Spirit that transforms us, and makes us believe in God, in our Savior Jesus Christ, in the work on the cross, our redemption, eternal life, and as we wait for that day, that our lives are in His hands.
Understanding to patiently wait upon the Lord to fulfill his plan – day by day – in our lives, and not to try and tell the Lord what He should do! Even if are taught to ask, we were also taught – by His Son - to place our trust in Him: "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." (Luke 22:42).
As we faithfully serve the Lord and study the Scriptures, we will increase in understanding, avoid many disappointments, and rejoice with the plan of salvation and eternal life that our Creator has for all of us.
O que pensa o ser humano?
Paulo escreveu : "Ora, aquele que é poderoso para fazer tudo muito mais abundantemente além daquilo que pedimos ou pensamos, segundo o poder que em nós opera, a esse seja glória na igreja e em Cristo Jesus, por todas as gerações, para todo o sempre. Amém” (Efésios 3: 20-21).
Nós geralmente nos lembramos das petições que temos junto ao Senhor, mas muitas vezes não nos conscientizamos dos nossos pensamentos em relação ao Criador. Examinemos alguns exemplos das Escrituras: quando o povo de Israel partiu do Egito, a certo ponto Faraó e seu exército os seguiam de perto, e a sua frente estava o Mar Vermelho. Êles se voltaram a Moisés (aquele que o povo conseguia enxergar) “ …. Foi porque não havia sepulcros no Egito que de lá nos tiraste para morrermos neste deserto? Por que nos fizeste isto, tirando-nos do Egito? " (Exodo 14:11). Mais tarde, quando o mesmo povo de Israel foi enfrentado e desafiado por Golias, encontramos a em I Samuel 17:11 a seguinte reação: “Ouvindo, então, Saul e todo o Israel estas palavras do filisteu, desalentaram-se, e temeram muito.”
No Novo Testamento encontramos situações semelhantes, onde o povo, com falta de fé e de entendimento, subestima o poder e o plano de Deus. Na crucifixação de Jesus, quando tantos esperavam que o Senhor os libertasse do poder de Roma, que Êle saísse vivo da cruz, imaginamos a decepção reinante nos corações daqueles que o conheceram. Quanta tristeza encontramos nos servos a caminho de Emaús… (Lucas 24:13-35)
Êsses exemplos, e muitos outros, nos mostram uma imagem clara da fraqueza e limitação do ser humano. O que Paulo quis dizer quando menciona “ … segundo o poder que em nós opera….. ” ? O poder de Deus tem variação ? Altos e baixos? Todos nós sabemos a resposta a estas perguntas. O poder de Deus opera em nós de acordo com a porção de fé que temos em Deus, por Jesus Cristo, e do entendimento que possuimos sôbre o relacionamento entre nós e Deus.
Fé é a obra pelo Espírito Santo que nos transforma, que nos faz crer em Deus, em nosso Salvador Jesus Cristo, a obra na cruz, na redenção, vida eterna, e no aguardo daquele dia, que nossas vidas estao em Suas mãos.
Entendimento para esperarmos com paciência o cumprimento do plano de Deus em nossas vidas – dia após dia – e não tentarmos impor a nossa vontade. Ainda que somos ensinados a pedir, também fomos ensinados – pelo Seu filho amado – a colocar nossa confiança Nêle: ”… Pai, se queres afasta de mim este cálice; todavia não se faça a minha vontade, mas a tua.” (Lucas 22 :42)
Continuemos a servir a Deus fielmente, e a estudar as Escrituras, para que o nosso entendimento sempre creça, evitando decepções desnecessárias, e nos alegrando cada vez mais com o plano de salvação e vida eterna que o Criador tem para todos nós.
