Entrepreneurial Experiences

Life experiences; real estate entrepreneurship made me develop my skills and abilities

Much of my entrepreneurial experiences and success derive from a unwavering desire to solve affordable housing deficiency in Bryan, Texas from fall 2015-fall 2018. I was always pitching a development concept related to the market trends. I was always leading my community towards a common cause.

Over the past decade, I have used many of the skills and abilities that are taught in the MLPD program, none more so than conceptualization, collaboration, and communication. Each year since its inception, Comfortably Living has realized an increase in revenue due to my relentless pursuit of being of service to the communities I care about most. I have always maintain the organization even during the two years I spent teaching. Property development and real estate brokerage are now part of my DNA.

Affordable housing development made me implement community organizing into the plan, 2015-2018

As part of the East MLK Smart Growth Initiative from the time I left BVAC in July 2015 until I went on a three month sabbatical in California in the fall of 2018, I kept building upon concepts that would influence the development of affordable housing in Bryan, Texas. Within this context, I worked primarily to broker land and property transactions. I used memorandums of understanding and letters of intent to help provide development advisement services during pre-development for land owners and investors. Additionally, I spent much time marketing my home buying program, "Home Buying for Smart Buyers" to build a pipeline of first time home buyers who earned less than 120% of the area median income.

Collaboration led my career in the political arena, 2015-2018

After roughly 15 months of campaigning for my affordable housing initiative, in fall 2016 I was hired as an adviser and campaign manager for Prentiss Madison for Single Member District 2. This is the district where the East MLK corridor is situated. Prentiss and I worked together to get him elected. This eventually helped me be appointed to the Planning & Zoning Commission and helped my affordable housing concepts and research come to life even more. Councilman Madison and I communicated regularly about the direction of the district. He was able to give feet some of my ideas and gain knowledge about leveraging the impeding growth to benefit the entire district.

Brokerage and project management remain a staple of my development career: Office conversion into Airbnb rental project

302 East 22nd Street is a property sitting on a commercial lot that I brokered for my client to purchase and use as a short-term rental property. Located less than one mile from downtown Bryan the property fit my develop agenda for revitalizing the area near the East MLK corridor. The property required extensive renovations totally ~$70,000. I created the budget and timeline prior to going hard on the contract. Then I later provided project management; hiring a local contractor to lead the repairs. I was involved with the project from July 2018 to October 2018.
