oneVillage Foundation was a NGO started by Joy Tang in 2000. In 2003 I joined the effort after meeting with her and her team at the 2003 PlaNetwork Conference organized by Jim Fournier and Elizabeth Thompson.Â
The flagship Program was oneVillage Initiative (OVI), envisioned as a comprehensive, community-based approach still in the development stages that aims to promote the rapid replication of ecologically and socially sustainable systems around the world. Through our approach, we seek to maximize the potential of physical and virtual communities to do good for themselves and the larger world. Through these experiences and experiments, we seek to refine a process of replicating that success to other regions, through the development of a global strategy for build sustainable human habitats and societies that involves and empower people from all the globe in mutually supportive, win-win networks.
The core sub-set of OVI is Holistic ICT for EcoLiving; the dedication and focus of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) towards the holistic design of computer as well as social human networking solutions/systems. Under this approach, current ICT for Development (ICT4D) approaches are combined with sustainable development strategies to consider more fully, both the social and ecological impacts of the use of computers and to ensure that the overall benefit to humanity is a net positive.
