Bioshelters were developed by the New Alchemy Institute from 1971 - 1991 in Cape Cod MA as self-contained living systems.
The link is made between Bioshelters and the Biosphere 2 experiment in that both were similarly designed as considering how to create a self-contained environment for human habitation. However Bioshelters never attempted to try to produce all the oxygen and supplies for life needed for the inhabitants.
One of the originators of the Institute was John Todd who went on to popularize a key component of many New Alchemy experiments which was featured in several Bioshelters - a Living Machine or EcoMachine. A dispute over ownership of the technology led to a split with John Todd renaming his a Eco Machine and another entity Living Machine Technologies keeping control of the Living Machine name.
Tracy and John Hightower of Waterfield Farms in Amherst MA, deployed a modified version of a bioshelter as an experiment in Aquaponics.
Greg Watson and Bruce Fulford were both involved in the New Alchemy's work and have gone on to become leaders in the Urban Agriculture Movement in Boston.
