Aquaponics is a rapidly emerging field of organic hydroponics that includes the integration of fish farming with hydroponics. The term organic hydroponics does not necessarily refer to the pesticide content of the food but rather the production of it in a way that is based natural processes of creating the nutrients that the plants absorb through the water.
The concept was pioneered over the years by several groups including S&S Aquaponics of which a discussion group they started still remains.
Currently one of the leaders of the movement is Will Allen (former NBA basketball player) whose urban integrated farm called Growing Power is one of the most notable success stories. Will's company is based on Milwalkie and he also has a greenhouse in Chicago as well.
Allen has become a hero to many in the green design and DIY movement promoting more sustainable ways of food production in urban environments.
