Starting a nut orchard has proven to be a fruitful endeavor for lots of people, finding it a fulfilling way to grow their money. It takes, however, a considerable amount of skills and resources to establish a productive nut orchard. Here are some tips on how to begin an orchard enterprise:

Determine what species of nuts to grow: Not all nuts are grown the same. So, the first step that should be taken is to choose which nuts to plant, and research on how they should be cultivated. The following points are also based on the types of nuts that would be used.

Select the right location: Some of the essential factors that affect the production of nuts are climate, site, and soil. The local and regional weather patterns should be taken into account; extreme temperatures or conditions can damage the trees and inhibit optimal production of nuts. The topography, aspect, slope, and irrigation supply of the site should be conducive for the trees and for the farmers. Tree crops are sensitive to the soil profile, so soil management should also be given priority.

Plan the orchard: The spacing between the trees should be planned properly because the plants need the right amount of nutrition, soil space, water supply, and airflow, among others. It is recommended to start with a few trees first, then expand gradually after it has been proven that the trees can be nurtured properly in the orchard.
