Most kids are fond of candies and other sweets. For parents, getting their kids to eat healthy is a year-round job with no breaks. Watching what kids eat can be a lot more challenging throughout the holidays, with the abundance of candies and chocolates during dinner parties. Encourage kids to snack on healthy food such as nuts, fruits, and veggies. Important in keeping a balanced diet, these super foods boost dental health as well. When it comes to entrées, choose for the kids foods that are packed with phosphorus and protein like turkey, fish, chicken, milk, and eggs, shares Dr. Kami Hoss.
All through the holidays, it is almost impossible to keep children off the sweets. Schedule their desserts shortly after a heavy meal to wash away food particles and block acids produced by bacteria, as production of saliva is increased while one eats. Although perceived much healthier than candies and chocolates, sticky dried fruit treats can be bad for the teeth, too. These treats have the tendency to stick on the teeth for longer periods of time, prolonging the exposure of the teeth to sugar, which can lead to cavities. To strengthen a child’s teeth, let them enjoy some cheese and yogurt as these are rich in protein and calcium. According to Dr. Kami Hoss, it would be best for parents to always have a glass of water ready for their kids to drink. Not only will this ensure they are properly hydrated, but also help wash away particles stuck between teeth that may form plaque.
