Parents are encouraged to bring their children to the dentist’s office as early as they are six months old and as often as once a year. This is to make sure that they have good oral health, even as they grow older. Unfortunately, several possible barriers may prevent a child from receiving the right oral care, from lack of insurance coverage, funds, time, and knowledge to fear of visiting the dental clinic. Dr. Kami Hoss strives to overcome these barriers with The Super Dentist, a pediatric dentistry and orthodontic practice he co-founded in San Diego with his wife. He has also provided additional motivation for parents by going on record to say that dental health can impact the different areas of a child’s life, including his or her academic performance.
This has been backed up by several studies for the past years. For example, a research published in the American Journal of Public Health reports that dental pain can cause children to miss time from school and affect their ability to concentrate on their studies or accomplish school tasks. Dr. Kami Hoss also cited a 2012 study by the University of South California’s School of Dentistry on nearly 1500 children, which determined that there was a correlation between oral pain and academic performance. The research shows that children who expressed that they recently experienced tooth pain were four times more likely to have a low grade point average.
