Bedouin Weaving event at UC Berkeley

Bedouin Weaving of Saudi Arabia and its Neighbors

Lecture | September 23 | 5 p.m. | 340 Stephens Hall

Speaker: Ms. Joy May Hilden, Author

Sponsor: Center for Middle Eastern Studies

In this illustrated lecture, Joy Hilden will share some of her experiences in Saudi Arabia researching the crafts of weaving, spinning, and dyeing. Portable and practical, tough and colorful, Bedouin textiles played, until recent times, a vital and functional part in the life of the Arab nomads. Bedouin women were expected to master the art of making entire tents as well as a wide range of rugs, saddlebags and other equipment able to withstand the rigors of the desert. Joy Hilden’s book is the most exhaustive study to date of the weaving methods practiced by the Bedouin of Saudi Arabia.
