"WATN?" leads off this page with a Twin Spin. Pam Padgett and Cindy Gooch are cousins.

René Michelle Sparrow

René, another early graduate from Mrs. Hines's American English course, has weighed in as making this gathering. Another She has branched off in to the oriental art of medicine and treatment. She practices in her own clinic in Little Rock, AR.

From one of René's many satisfied clients: "Wow. What a great person; acupuncturist, massage therapist, driver, teacher, spiritualist, provider of cheerfulness and on into infinity... one of the best I have ever met!!!"

Pamela Jean Padgett

Pam is another classmate that took Mrs. Hines's American English course during the summer of 1970 that went on to graduate early. She took a break before entering UNC in the mid 80's. Pam made it to Florida and started working for the Veterans Administration a few years ago. Shortly after starting work she came to find out that classmate Gail Varley had also been hired around the same time. Small world!!!

Galt my man,

Gail and I are both social workers for the VA. We were hired three weeks apart. I couldn't believe it when I saw her. Hadn't seen her since high school. I'm surprised you guys had a hard time finding me. My sister Debbie is still in Chapel Hill and in the phone book (that would have been too easy, right?)

Loved seeing the info on Skippy on the website. What's with the Ras Ditty? I remember summer school English class after 10th grade, so we could all graduate early after 11th. Skippy came to class all Hari Krishnaed-up, wearing nothing but an orange sheet, and trying to organize a Mazola Oil party. What a character! Hope he makes the reunion.

S.W. Florida, where I live, is a wasteland. Moved here for the weather. I lucked out and got this VA job two years ago, and sure as hell can't leave it with no jobs out there.

I've attached the 1967 photo I found. Didn't even know I had it. Don't know if you think it is worth posting on the Website, but I don't know if folks have many pictures out there of classmates in the 7th grade. I have no idea who the blond guy is sitting next to Tracy. I wrote "Steve" on the back, no last name. Maybe someone can identify him. I'll be mailing the 10th Reunion photo to you tomorrow. I was trying to remember what the reunion was like, but all I can remember is that I had fun, we had a pig picking, and I could not believe when I heard that Jim Waddell had died less than 10 years later. And, yes, Cindy Gooch Cross is my cousin. I haven't seen her in quite a few years. I hope she comes to the reunion. Have you heard from her? That would be fantastic if Mike Cross would play at the reunion.

You really should put your bio on the website. It would make a great movie.

You wrote that Danny Miller had an amazing story. What is it? I was always sort of fascinated by him.

Who can forget Cindy's folk ballads in the Guy B. Phillips talent contests held in the gym which she won as often as not? Cindy was already working aat the Record Bar when she graduated in 1972.

After graduation, she landed a job as a sound engineer with CBS Sports Spectacular and traveled the world while learning the skills that would last her a lifetime. She returned to Chapel Hill and worked for a brief stint at the Record Bar in charge of district merchandising. Since then Cindy has hooked up with and married Mike Cross of Blue Grass fame (Check out the web site). Check out You Tube video. They have toured for over 30 years, often performing over 300 nights a year. Cindy was the sound technician and often performed one number during Mike's concerts. They have a 26 year old son, Patrick and reside in Chapel Hill; not more than a few miles from the Rigmor. Cindy says she'll make it if she is physically up for it.

Several years ago Cindy contracted Lyme Disease from a tick bite. That went misdiagnosed and untreated for several years and now Cindy deals with the effects on a daily basis. It's a horrible story. Up here in New York and throughout New England Lyme Disease is a serious issue but most of the time it is diagnosed and treated quickly with full recoveries. In North Carolina, not so much. Insurance companies and politicians have conspired to declare that the condition does not exist and refuse to cover treatment and take measures to have doctors that do lose their medical license and face daunting litigation and harassment. For more on Lyme Disease watch the documentary Under Our Skin which you can rent though Netflix or Amazon.com.

The Tale of Finding DeWitt Long

From the Bounty Hunter Files of Stephanie Plum:

As some of you know, we had been looking for DeWitt Clyde Long for a while and coming up empty. Finally, on June 23, 2011 Wicca and Esau sent several emails blindly out into the ether from the search engine web site they were using saying this:

DeWitt,

What's up brother? I hope this is a good email address. Michael Esau here. Bet you did not see that coming, unless you already read the email from Leslie Paull.

We are planning a reunion for next Memorial Day weekend (2012). It is for everyone that would have graduated in 1972 from CHHS whether they actually did or not and that includes you. We have found over 440 of the 550 brothers and sisters we are looking for. We have been looking for you since April 4, 2011 when we had only found about 60 or so.

Different people have called some poor woman in Rydall, GA whose husband passed in 1999 (same name, same age range) so many times that she now knows who you are and where you were last known to live. She would like to meet you.

We chased you to Trinity Avnuee in Durham and were hopeful until we figured out it was 20 years since you were there. We have an Atlanta address but we are starting to think that is no good, too. The last confirmed siting we have is from Michael Sandford around 1996. Dickinson University has lost track of you. We have put out a $30.00 bounty for information that leads to contacting you. There are now at least 20 people actively looking for you.

We want our sports reporter from Mrs. Cook's 6th grade class and future Yankees short stop back in time for the festivities.

I have a couple of favors to ask of you.

1) Do not be dead, in jail, a nursing home, mental institution or otherwise incapacitated.

2) Contact us so we can devote more time to contacting the other 150 brothers and sisters we have left to find.

3) Call or email me instead of Wicca (Leslie Paull) or it will cost me $30.00.

4) Tell us where George Fowler is because we are looking for him, too.

5) Block Memorial Day weekend next year. There are a lot of people waiting to see you.

Mike Esau

----------------------------

Within a few hours we got this back:

Michael ---

Wow. Not even I am this interested in me.

Please apologize to Leslie for me. Since I didn't go to CHHS, I figured, well, you know. And if you're not kidding about the $30, it's probably only fair that you split it.

As for your requests:

1) I continue to be undead,

2) am contacting you,

3) see above,

4) have no idea where George Fowler is. They moved to Lexington, Ky in the mid-60's. Am probably wrong but I kind of sort recall that his father's first name is Ira. And,

5) see that there just happens to be an opening in my schedule next Memorial Day.

Michael, thank your for all the effort. Keep me posted.

This "WATN?" chapter is still a little sketchy. Many will remember DeWitt's mom, Mrs. Freda Palmer Long. She taught English at Guy B. Phillips and lived right across the street at 603 Estes Drive. Mrs. Long passed away on June 1, 2000 at the age of 77.

Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the Nothern Hemisphere Borrelia is transmitted to humans by the bite of infected ticks belonging to a few species of the genus Ioxdes ("hard ticks"). Early symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, depression and a characteristic circular skin rash callederythema migrans. Left untreated, later symptoms may involve the joints, heart, and central; nervous system. In most cases, the infection and its symptoms are eliminated by antibiotics, especially if the illness is treated early. Delayed or inadequate treatment can lead to the more serious symptoms, which can be disabling and difficult to treat.

Because of the expense and difficulty of treating late stage Lyme disease, insurance companies have chosen to deny the existence of the disease in order to avoid that cost which ensures that early diagnosis will not happen. This undermines relatively easy diagnosis (you cannot diagnose a disease that does not exist) and effective inexpensive treatment when diagnosed early (I cannot proscribe treatment for a disease that does not exists). Their tactics include wrongfully denying claims and using bought and paid for doctors and politicians to sue doctors that do treat and taking away their license to practice. These tactics have been effective in frightening the medical community into going along for fear of losing their livelihood in states like North Carolina.

The predictable result is that there a lot more people are suffering from chronic Lyme in NC, where the disease is rarer than in the northeast than here in New York, where Lyme is common, where all of us know several people that contracted Lyme, got diagnosed quickly, went through treatment and fully recovered before any long term permanent damage had occurred.

"WATN?" occasionally comes upon the unexpected story of a brother or sister from back in the day that does not fit neatly into any category. Hugh's father was a merchant marine. When Hugh was a child Hugh Sr. was lost at sea aboard the Marine Sulphur Queen, a 425 foot freighter, that vanished in the Bermuda Triangle in 1963.

Excerpt from Limbo of the Lost: Story of the Bermuda Triangle: The Marine Sulfur Queen was the first ship ever to carry molten sulfur. On what would prove to be its last voyage, the ship set out on February 2, 1963, from Beaumont, Texas. It was headed to Virginia and maintained radio contact with several stations until February 4, when it rounded Florida and headed out of the Gulf. After that, nothing was heard from the ship again. Coast Guard officials put forth several logical explanations. One was that seawater seeping into the ship had met the hot sulfur tank had caused a buildup of steam which had built up enough pressure to blow a hole in the ship. It was also possible that rough seas had caused the sulfur to slosh around and emit gases which had been sparked into an explosion. Several bits of wreckage supported these "sudden disaster" theories, including life jackets, a broken oar, a shirt, bits of wood and several oil cans. Whatever the cause, the Marine Sulfur Queen was gone, vanished forever in the waters of the Bermuda Triangle. More on the Bermuda Triangle

The Resurrection of Tommy Lockhart

From the Bounty Hunter Files: Closed case on Thomas Long

Lockhart reopened.

Excerpt: 'In the summer of 1962, my father and I hitchhiked 2,512 miles from Chapel Hill, NC to Disneyland in Anaheim, California.'...

The Southern Mafia

Jimmy had investigated The Stockbridge School in Stockbridge, MA during the summer after eighth and found it to be good. It was coed and allowed "independent and self directed" study. Jimmy came back and along with Billy Gehweiler, Ronnie Taylor and Charlie Thibaut returned for ninth grade. They became known on the campus as the "Southern Mafia". After a student's freshman year they had to be "invited" back to continue on to graduation. It was the only time in it's history that no student was invited back and therefore there was no Class of 1972. "The Lip" struck out on his own after that Charlie and Ronnie both returned to CHHS in 10th. Lasley attended another progressive prep school, Sandy Springs Friends School and was booted for smoking cigarettes in the woods nearby. He returned to CHHS for 11th grade and left for South Carolina that summer and did not return to school until later.

The alumnus most closely associated with Stockbridge School is Arlo Guthrie, whose arrest for littering by Stockbridge police shortly after graduation in 1965 inspired the song "Alice's Restaurant". Other notable alumni include comedian Chevy Chase and political theorist Benjamin Barber.

"WATN?" Bounty Hunters has just announced a $20.00 reward and 4 points in the Little Bo Peep Contest for information leading to contacting missing classmate William (Billy) John Gehweiler Jr., AKA~ The Lip, last known to be in Raleigh and like about 15 classmates has tasted the cuisine of NC Department of Corrections. The rest is a little sketchy.

Billy "The Lip" and Jimmy

Back in June "WATN?" learned that Tommy's family had not heard from him since 1986 and was presumed dead. He was the only deceased classmate that "WATN?" could find neither an obituary, coroner's report or SSN death notice on. It was assumed that Tommy ended up in an unmarked grave somewhere. On February 8, John Galt received a tip that Kay Pendergraph Tapp had recently spoken to Chuck Lockhart and new information had arisen that indicated Tommy is still alive. Here is the Cliff Notes version of the first interview with Chuck Lockart, CHHS Class of 1974 as told to John Galt:

"Tommy transferred to UNC from East Carolina University at the beginning of his sophomore year (picture is Tommy as a freshman at ECU).

He majored in Physics. Every year he made the Dean's List and was fixin' to graduate at the head of his class in 1976. In the middle of the second semester of his senior year, Tommy withdrew from school. We have pieced together since then that he was in the early stages of a mental illness, delusional paranoia, which was exacerbated by an alcohol and substance abuse issue. Over the next 10 years Tommy basically lived as a homeless street person. He made erratic, infrequent phone calls to home. Our family and friends tried but were not able to get Tommy the help he needed. My last contact with my brother was in 1986. I got home and there was a four hour old phone message waiting for me from Tommy. I called the number which turned out to be a pay phone in Key West. Tommy answered the phone. We talked for a little while but it was hard to make any sense of it.

When your classmates came asking about Tommy it had been 25 years since that day. We had assumed he had passed away long ago as it was a hard life he was leading. The last time I saw him he was 6'2" and 155 pounds. We have tried numerous times to search for him, especially after the Internet made searching so much easier but we never got even a nibble, until last November.

I drive a bus for the Chapel Hill/Carrboro City schools. A security guard at the high school came out and struck up a conversation with me. I introduced myself and he asked if I was related to a Tommy Lockhart. After I told him that I was his brother he asked me to come with him to the office, that he had something I needed to see.

They had a file with letters Tommy has been sending sporadically to the school for decades addressed to students and teachers long gone. The last one was dated November, 2010 from Deming, New Mexico. We do not know where the trail leds after that."

"WATN?" contacted the Deming Police Department and spoke to a dispatch sergeant. Indeed they arrested a Thomas Long Lockhart in November of 2010, who would be 57 years old now. He was in jail a couple of days and released. The sergeant did not know anything more but promised to check around.

Mick,

So, Robin and I have three grown kids, Peter, Merrimon and Ann. I have thirty years with the State in HR. I spend a lot of time in "prison ministry" at the Orange County minimum security prison. Don't worry, they didn't allow me to be a real minister. I am an Episcopalian the last thirty years; so no longer a mackerel snapper but my folks still attend St. Thomas Moore regularly. I live in Chapel Hill and commute to Raleigh or Butner all my career just about.

Robin and I had both had a break up in a relationship around 1980. I was married for a few years to a girl I met at Wisky U and Steve and Leslie got us together.

We have three grown children:

Peter~ 29 years old and a struggling young defense attorney in derm NC.

Merrimon~ 26 years old and is a married school marm in Austin Texas.

Annie~ 23 years old goes part time to UNC as she also works with a start up company.

I have been with the State in HR and Robin is a school teacher who just finished principal school and is trying to get on as a principal. So let me get it straight- Peggy-who I know -is your present wife right? How did you get back up with her?

The Tale of Finding Maru Kaneda

From the Bounty Hunter Files of Stephanie Plum: found this in Esau's files today after he cleaned out his desk.

Wicca and I both have occasionally tried to find the inscrutable Maru Kaneda. His likeness in the 1972 Hill Life has mocked us relentlessly. No hits on any search engines for that name, no classmates in touch past high school, nothing-nada-zilch-buttkist. Was he really ever here?

Then one night I google "Maru Kaneda Chapel Hill" like I have 100 times before. I get that same 40 year old Toshika Kaneda in MD that we can't find a phone number on and probably has nothing to do with our Maru anyway. I skim through the other hits becoming mildly interested in the mathematics articles. Then without even being aware of it I notice one of the lecturer/researcher's name is Masaharu- M...aru. Well that guy turns out to be some internationally renowned Mathematician that pops up in high level seminars and lectures around the world, has done research and graduate work at Oregon University, Osaka City University and others and may live in Chicago (no phone number available). I am having no luck getting a contact point when I find one of his papers with an email address in it. It's at least 15 years old. Here ya go:

Maru, Mr. Naito and Osaka City University,

What's up brother? I am Michael Esau. I am a member of the Chapel Hill Class of 1972 from Chapel Hill HS in Chapel Hill, NC. We are looking for Masaharu Kaneda (Maru). I hope you are him. We are going to get together for our 40th reunion next year over Memorial Day weekend. I found this email address on the paper you and Saoshi Naito published. I have also found that you went to the University of Oregon and possibly lived in Chicago but I could not find a phone number. Mr. Kaneda, please email me back to let me know if I have found the right man.

Mr. Naito and Osaka City University, if you have current contact information for Mr. Kaneda please email it to me or contact Mr. Kaneda to let him know his classmates are looking for him.

Thank you,

Mike Esau and Wicca Davidson

"WATN?" will feature several students from other countries that spent time at CHHS as exchange students or while a parent attended UNC. Maru is a gifted Mathematician, often schooling his teachers at CHHS.

He also was a key player on the inaugural CHHS Men's Soccer Team. They suffered their only loss of that first season in the semi-finals of the state championship tournament. The next season, 1973, the Tigers went undefeated and won the NC State HS Championship by defeating East Mecklenburg, 1-0, on a goal scored by David Sanford (Mike's brother).

Hello Everyone,

David was born in Charlotte, NC. His family moved to Chapel Hill in 1955 when he was one. He claims to be a Chapel Hill native. He attended Estes Hills Elementary School. I was born in Gastonia, NC, moved to Rutherfordton, NC where I went to first grade at Rutherfordton Elementary School. My family moved to Chapel Hill in 1966. We both attended Guy B Phillips Junior High but didn't meet until 10th grade at Chapel Hill High. In 10th grade he and Alison Hill were going together. She and I were good friends. Alison was very pretty and was constantly being asked out by the upperclassmen. She called me one night and told me she planned to break up with David and suggested I ask him to the Thanksgiving dance. I asked him out, he accepted and we have been together since the spring of 10th grade. We both graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill majoring in Education. After we student taught we both decided not to teach. I went to work at UNC in the Human Resources department and worked there as an employment recruiter and later for the UNC Health Care System as the UNC-Physicians and Associates Human Resources Director. I retired with 30 years and have been working various contract/temporary positions since. David worked for UNC Hospitals for one year after college and returned to school for two additional years to become an Optician. He has most recently been employed with Chapel Hill Ophthalmology as the Manager of the Optical department.

After David graduated from Optician School, we moved to Columbia, SC for one year. He was offered a job as an Optical Manager and I worked at Providence Hospital in Human Resources. We really missed Chapel Hill and we were both offered jobs to come back. We didn't have to think about returning. We were thrilled to get back to Chapel Hill.

We have taken several nice trips in the past few years including St. John in the Virgin Islands, drove the Maine coastline and on to Nova Scotia, attended our niece's wedding in Portland and added Seattle and Vancouver BC, visited Phil Hawkins who was one year ahead of us and currently is a fantastic photographer in Yosemite and added the Big Sur and Carmel areas. Most recently we went to Key West as well as many trips to Texas to see the children. We really enjoy traveling and photography and hope to do more of both in the future.

David is currently a Deacon in our church, University Presbyterian, where he attended as a child. We built our home in Carrboro 25 years ago and have a famous neighbor, Jesse Basnight.

Michael, David and I really appreciate your extensive work on our reunion. We know you have spent a lot of time which will enable all of us to enjoy ourselves in May. Thank you so much.

Interesting note: Roomed with Tracy Tillman at ECU during their freshman year.

Written by Goose when we thought we had lost her:

Linda Gosnell! Taught me a life lesson and I never told her about or thanked her for. I think she came to Phillips in 8th or 9th and I was in Ms. John's English class with her.

On Poem Reading Day I, as usual, waited to the last minute and came up with with some lame Walt Whitman classic or something similar. Bombed reading that boring poem in front of class.

Linda read the lyrics from a fabulous Beatles song from the White Album or the Sgt. Pepper's album and it was simply so good, so profound, it silenced the class and of course Ms. John adored it.

Linda taught me to think forward and not in the past, and that it's not the package (she seemed so quiet) but what is inside. Always thought of that moment whenever I saw her.

Hi Mike,

You caught up with me just after I returned to Oaxaca in southern Mexico after a week in the remote Sierra Sur near the Pacific Coast. Five days in the forests collecting plants and spending nights documenting bat pollination of a new species of tree there. All great fun, and now I get to take a bath.

I am planning on attending the reunion, but I have two international visitors working with me in SF at that time. Nevertheless, I am planning on slipping away. Hopefully my wife Mary, a much nicer person than me, will be able to come too.

After college, I spent four months traveling in South America before grad school in Ann Arbor. My first job out of grad school was in the Dept. of Botany at Arizona State, where I met my wife Mary, who shared my interest in desert and tropical plants. In 1986 I was offered a curatorship in botany at the California Academy of Sciences, where I have been a research scientist ever since. My focus has been on plants in Mexico, Central America, Madagascar, and the islands of Sao Tome & Principe. In my spare time, I am grants director for a charitable trust that funds botanical gardens in the Western Hemisphere. I thought I had a reasonably interesting life until I read about Bobby Brame.

Best wishes to you, and thanks for all the work you and others have put into this. I have enjoyed the website very much.

Take care,

Tom

Michael,

After HS, I went to ECU for 3 years, the second year I did a foreign school year in Puebla Mexico and.spent lots of weekends in Acapulco, Oaxaco, Mexico City, Vera Cruz...met Stan Horton my last year of college and we married in June 1977. We lived in Apex NC for 3 years.

Stan and I joined the Navy together (1st couple in the Raleigh area to join together- we were in the newspaper!), went to boot camp together! and were stationed in Florida for a year and then Guam for 3 years. I got out after 1 tour to have and stay home with our 2 boys, Travis and Justin, who are now 27 and 29! We lived in Scotland while Stan stayed in the Navy. In 1990 we returned to Apex NC and I went to nursing school and then worked at Carolina Meadows in Chapel Hill for 11 years. Stan and I divorced after 25 years. A year later I met Bruce Sokol and we have been partners ever since. We moved to WV in '09... bought 30 acres, built a house, bought 2 horses, 6 goats, adopted 3 cats... and I am in heaven every day now. This is the life I was born to live...mighty fast... watching UNC and OHIO play basketball!

Over and over "Where Are They Now?" Studioscomes across stories that tell themselves.

Hey Mike!

Oh my, but I do love talking to you!! I called Becky Moss a few minutes ago…had to leave a message so we will see what happens and I will let you know how things progress.

Now for the past 40 years ...

MANDRAKE JAKE

Once again the net around the Goose Family Syndicate gets a little wider and draws a little tighter. It appears that "Jake" may be none other than "Mandrake Jake" a mysterious banker moll on the Goose Family payroll during the 1980's that was never identified and disappeared. She is thought to have engineered a clean break by making and securing a copy of the "real books" and taking refuge with an independent Harley Motorcycle Club. It's rumored she remains in contact with Goose & Associates though is no longer involved in the "business". When the question came up during Jake's "WATN?" episode the reporter was dismissed by Jake with derisive laughter.

"Talk to Ron 'The Little Don' Colville."

Mandrake: Parasympathetic depressant, hallucinogen, and hypnotic. Mandrake root causes delirium and hallucinations. According to the legend, when the root is dug up it screams and kills all who hear it.

"Where Are They Now?" filed a FOIA request with the US Drug Enforcement Administration concerning Goose and any known or suspected associates in south Florida during the 1980s and 90s. This resulted in the DEA's

Florida Task Force Division releasing addresses for Goose while he was allegedly working the off shore banking business for his associates as he consolidated his own power base during the 1980's and early 90's.

Decatur Jones, already a known associate of Gozzle's for over a decade by then, had set up shop in the area and was photographed repeatedly with Goose living large in Miami. This was probably where Goose set up his play to branch and establish his own empire. Decatur was later rumored to be one of the consiglieres in the syndicate. Goose gross doubled within during the early 1980s. The FBI/DEA/ATF as well as competing syndicate families never discovered Goose's uncanny ability to avoid detection.

Briefly, Mike Esau pops back up on the radar, literally, as an Air Traffic Controller during this time in Ft. Lauderdale/Miami from 1982 to 1985 while rekindling the mutually lucrative association with Decatur and Goose. Esau worked at the Miami Air Route Traffic Control Center, home of the "non-existent" DEA radar room that "didn't" track low flying aircraft from Mexico and the Bahamas en-route to the Florida Everglades and well concealed dirt strips. Esau, was mostly known as an independent operator that did piece work for the Goose Family Syndicate based on a relationship that started in Troop 835 and was cemented during the "Great Escape" from Guy B. Phillips penitentiary in 1969.

Thomas Calvin Wilson

I graduated with you guys in 1972. I went to ECU and got my BS in Early Childhood Education K-3. Like most people I ended up in an entirely different line of work. I moved to Greenville, NC after I graduated college and went to work at Darryl's 1907 as a waitress where I met my first husband. We married in March of 1978, moved around a lot and divorced at the end of 1980.

I then moved to Sunrise in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl and stayed with my parents till I got back on my feet. I got into banking down there. I also met my 2nd husband, Larry, down there. This marriage was way more successful as our 30th anniversary is the month after our reunion. Anyway, at the time Larry

(Jake at Campbell)

owned a frame shop and I needed extra money so he gave me a part time job as a framer. I was scared shitless because I didn’t think I could do that type of work. I am not artistic at all, but a funny thing happened. It turns out out that I got really good at framing and design, and discovered that this was a lot of fun. So my career in framing began, and now all these years later I have my own frame shop. I am one of the few lucky ones tht goes to work and "play" all day long. I love my job! I don't make a fortune but I am one VERY HAPPY camper.(Jake as a Senior at ECU)

I moved to Chapel Hill in August 1968 just before school started. We moved from Fayetteville where I had lived for 6th-8th grades. I was the "New Girl" in 9th grade at Guy B. Phillips I remember my first day of school. I was very worried about how things were going to play out, I was wondering how many fist fights I was going to be in and I was also worrying that all of you were going to be just as hateful and horrid as the kids in Fayetteville. I learned all about racism and anti-Semitism at the ripe old age of 10. I was called Jewy Jake for a time and so I beat the crap out of every kid who called me that. Eventually it stopped but then I was still that damn Yankee from NJ. Because of all that, I figured it would be more of the same in Chapel Hill.

Boy, was I wrong. My first day amongst you all was SO different ….none cared about my religion or that I was from the North. All you cared about was my character and the kind of person I was. The other stuff didn't matter. And that is something I will always be grateful for.

Emily Carnes was one of the first girls to come and talk to me and I believe Wicca was of the first too. Actually, there were a whole lot of kids coming up to me to introduce themselves to me. You all made me feel so welcome and man, I am so glad my Dad's job moved us to Chapel Hill, because Fayettvill really sucked a big one.

I guess what I really want to say to everyone is Thank You….Thank you for being such a phenomenal group of people and I am SO proud to be in the 1972 graduating class ofChapel Hill High School.

I am addicted to Dancing with the Stars! I will even miss a HOG chapter meeting when its on. Also addictd to Young and the Restless soap opera :).

Mike, I look forward to hearing from you about the possible framing projects.

Your friend,

Jake

Hello John G.,

Here's what I've been up to. How's the butterfly collection doing?

  • I've been a health care executive for more than 25 years leading change and operations in hospitals, clinics and health plans.

  • I've been living in San Diego for almost 24 years, I was born in New York City and grew up in North Carolina. Although, I'm a New York Yankee born, I'm a Tarheel bred.

  • I love “film noir” . My favorite is the 1937 version of Lost Horizon which is a story about peace and everlasting youth in a Utopian place in Tibet called Shangri-La.

  • A slow moving long distance runner, I work out every day and I am married to a former Iron man triathlete, (now cyclist) and have one daughter who is a smart, collegiate swimmer.

  • I'm an avid mystery reader, love spy novels and always imagined myself dressed in a trench-coat and transporting secret documents to save the nation.
