‎"Where Are They Now?" takes us on one of the most interesting and incredible journeys from not only the Class of 1972, but from anywhere. Say hello to an acclaimed author of world reknown. It is impossible to do Nancy's unique tale justice, here. Suffice it to say she is a shoo-in for a Chapee Award.

Excerpts from Nancy's web site:

In 1996 my first book, Life Without Water was published and chosen as a New York Times Notable Book. It was followed a few years later by Home Across the Road. In spite of this success I still had to keep my day job. I worked for years as a self-employed housecleaner. My third book, and my first work of nonfiction, is taken from my experiences of living as an artist and a maid; A Broom of One’s Own: Words on Writing, Housecleaning, and Life .

Mohamed A. Omran

"WATN?" brings us this story of sad irony. Mo was an early graduate from CHHS. Mohamed studied medicine and became an orthopedic surgeon of world renown. He was often sought outy his colleagues for consultation on the most difficult cases. Around seven years ago the very surgeries he was performing led to a catastrophic failure of his own back due to multiple ruptured discs. He has bed bed ridden and apartment bound for over five years, unable tosit formore than 15 minutes at a time due to the pain. During this time Arturo Perez-Reyes has reconnected with Mo. Just recently, Mohammed reported that they hae operated and on him and he is to undergo one more that will hopefully alleviate soem pain and bring back some mobility.

Hi Mike,

-Attending Staff Dept. of Orthopadic Surgery, Kaiser Medical Center , Sacramento/Roseville, CA 1985-2005

Now "retired"

Sincerely,

Mohamed Omran, M.D. (Mo !!!!!!!!!)

All:

Has the WATN committee been looking for Mohammed Omran? Does anybody else remember in 9th grade when Mohammed and I filmed a movie of the Odyssey using various other members of Mrs. Rashkis' class acting out episodes from the classic story? When we were done, Mohammed kept the film since it was his father's movie camera, and I got to keep the sound track (which is probably long lost.) Seth Gelblum was a major character - probably Odysseus. I have vivid memories of him crunched in the crawl space under my house since that was the best approximation of a cave that we could come up with. I think Heidi Zukowski was also involved. It would be great fun if that film comes to light...

Dear High School friends.

I regret that I will not be able to attend the reunion and have been out of touch. I miss all of you and the fond memories that will always be with me .

I am an Orthopaedic Surgeon in Sacramento, CA. from 1985 until my retirement in 2005.

Regards to all.

In the fourth grade my teacher, Mrs. Semonche, introduced me to the arts. Our class listened to music, viewed images of great paintings and sculpture, got our hands dirty with clay and paint, and even performed A Midsummer’s Night Dream. We also wrote. Of all these activities, writing was my favorite ... I now run writing workshops in my studio in Orange County. I live with my husband, Ben in a small house in Hillsborough, NC.

Bruce catches us up,

I attended North Carolina Central and majored in Health Education. Then I went on to UNC School of Medicine where I worked with renal failure patients (Hemodialysis/Perfusion).

I have lived in Atlanta for over 20 years. I'm married with two kids or I should say young adults. My kids have graduated from college ,now, and are in the work force.

For the last 30 or so years I worked as a Director of Biomedical Services. I am on a new adventure in medical manufacturing for renal patients. The company is Tango3: I’m the Chief Operations Officer

I am planning on making the festivities. I’m looking forward in seeing everyone.

Hi Mike,

The first photo was taken during my retirement ceremony from the United States Air Force at the United States Air Academy Hospital in 1994. Pictured in the first photo is me, son Christopher, Richard, and daughter Nyeka. The photo was taken at Richard's Air Force retirement ceremony in Sacramento, CA.

I graduated from North Carolina A & T State University with a BSN in Nursing in 1976. I entered the United States Air Force in 1978 as a registered nurse and worked as an RN throughout my military career. I retired from the at the rank of Major in 1994 in Colorado. I moved to Atlanta, GA in 2008 and currently work for the Department of Health & Human Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. I’ve been married to Richard Moore for 26 years. I have 3 children, Ali Cotton, Christopher Moore, and Nyeka Moore.

I regret I can’t be of help in contacting Priscilla or Diane. Since I joined the military and moved from Chapel Hill in the 70’s, I’ve had very little contact with fellow classmates.

This will the first CHHS Class of 1972 Reunion I’ve been able to attend since graduation. I’m excited and truly look forward to seeing everyone in May.

We finally caught up with Phil, scientist/manager/engineer, and we present for your approval the latest installment of "Where Are They Now?".

Phil started the Chapel Hill High School Class of 1972 Facebook page back in March of 2011 with eight other souls and this by-line:

This group is for members of the CHHS Class of 72, members that moved away, graduated early and other friends that want to join. Hopefully, we will find as many members of the class as possible.

Phil and eight other souls joined the group. Phil formed the CHHS-72 google group to keep everyone in the loop. He started the reunion web site and was a member of the Reunion Steering Committee through the summer. From those original nine the Class of 1972 family has grown to over 425 classmates accounted for.

Dr. Norman Weatherly , not to be denied, passed his name on to his daughter. Norma turned the same trick with a wrinkle naming one daughter "Weatherly". Dear JG,

Hey! I graduated from UNC nursing school in 1975 a month before we married, was a nurse for a while, then went to Univ of Mich law school graduating in 1981. Had our first child in my second year of law school, have had a series of law jobs including an asst DA, private practice, corporation counsel for the City of Ithaca, and at Cornell. I never could decide what I wanted to do when I grew up! We had 8 kids and now two grandkids. Holy Cow is right! It has been at times a wild, but mostly fun, ride!

Here is the skinny on the kids: All boys, except for the third, daughter who we gave my maiden name, Weatherly.

--Justin Jon is 32 and married to Juliet Schwab with a 4 year old daughter Auletta and 5 week old son, Lincoln. They have been living with us in Ithaca while Justin is in between clerkships.

--Whitney Jack is 28 and finishing up his PhD in Ancient Philosophy (our kids are so PRACTICAL!!). Ha a fairly serious girlfriend who is a grad student at NYU but due to job possibilities, who knows??

--Weatherly Ann -- 26 and in her final year of law school, not sure what she will do after, but some save the world type job.

--Zachary Ian--22 y.o who will graduate from college this spring with a degree in Environmental Studies, not because he cares much about the environment, but because he thinks thats where the jobs will be!

--Quintin Ivan 19 and a sophomore in college

--Soren Owen 16 and a high school junior

--Lehman Evan 15 year old high school sophomore

--Harris Zane 12 year old 7th grader

It is a busy life, made sort of manageable by life in a college town, and financially doable because of the free tuition at Cornell!

It will be great to see everybody in May---Stewart recently informed the Cornell Provost that he will miss graduation this year( sending the Vice Dean---Stewart, dear, have you asked her yet?? --in his place) so that he will not miss the reunion festivities. We will come to CH straight from our daughter's law school graduation!

Hope this is enough news for you...

William Joseph Arthur Jr.

Billy is one of at least three classmates that transferred to The Independent School, an experimental alternative to public school back in the day.

Billy lives in Snow Camp along with Norman Jackson. We should get a side by side photo of the two of them. He earns his keep working in the office and handling dispatch for Ludy Tree Care. He has given up his passion for things that go B-O-O-M! Billy is still an avid numismatist and is focused on completing his Barber dime collection. Billy Jr. was incorrectly reported as having passed away for a time before the gaff was corrected. Then, Billy heard the rumor that Billy Potts was deceased and refused to accept that state of affairs. Sure enough after much searching, Billy Jr. found Billy Potts was alive and living in Boone, NC. Well done!!! Billy like several denizens of "The Wall" in front of the Dairy Bar on Franklin Street, has tie ins to several CHHS classes.

Billy on what's up with Billy:

To answer your blue highlighted question, I went the wrong way! I got real tired of being in the ninth grade, and besides, my folks thought there was too much racial tension in public schools, so they enrolled me in the Independent School, which was a one year fiasco. I did learn how to smoke grass and drink wine and do more wrong. Then I enrolled in Durham Tech's High School Equivalence Program, and took a GED exam at UNC in 1971 for $15.00. Of course I have a high school diploma, just not the regular kind. I never went back to public school after the 9th grade. Now Mike, I'm not much of a computer guy. I didn't get one until 2006, and it isn't hooked up to anything, not even the wall outlet now. I got off all internet activity early this year, budgeting my money. I'm buying a home in Snow Camp and am the office manager for Ludy Tree Care Inc. for the last eleven years. So I use the computer here Monday through Friday to access email. I guess I'm a hermit, at best. I don't have a google account, and I don't do Facebook or those type of things. I see so much trouble people have trying to get off of those things, so why bother with it in the first place? Maybe I'd better give you a call... Billy

Billy unplugged:

It has been awhile now, but I was always implicated as to wearing mirrors on my shoes to see something that I wasn't supposed to...! Any chance y'all have some old penny loafers that still fit, and do you think I should post something to these effects on the website? Billy

You got it right, I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING. I don't know what gmail's archive folder is for, but I put your message in it, and now I don't know how to retrieve it. I did click on the highlighted group title, which took me directly to the site, and I found my yahoo email addy, but I couldn't delete it because evidently I was in my gmail account. We both have to work, you know. You manage airplanes, and I handle calls for tree work. Thank goodness IRENE didn't cause much of a fuss... Billy

I'm really upset about hearing about Potts. I don't think he's dead; what on earth could have killed him, and who gave you that info, and is it legit??? He had a wife/girlfriend named Gladys and she was older than him. Do we have the same guy, the Billy Potts that worked at Fowler's for so long? I know he moved to the mountains, but there's many Potts' in the mountains I found. Okay, that's enough babble from my single finger exercise for today. See? I don't even know how to make a paragraph in here. Where's my Underwood typewriter? Billy

Yeah, I finally did it. I also wrote a tidbit on the CHHS-72 to try and knock the rust off of some old brain cells. No email yet in my google box. I did it because Wicca was looking for Gene Alcott artwork, and I own a few. Please excuse my rants and stubbornness on your phone. My google handle is littlebilly. I'm working on locating Billy Potts for y'all. No news yet on that end... Billy

I don't know where Ricky is but a good bet is in prison. I read your list of folks that have been contacted/found, but there are many that I went to public school with that aren't mentioned. For instance, Johnny Mariakakis, Alan Humm, Geary Blackwood, Bill Lewellyn, David Hackney, David Caldwell, Robert Spransy... Richard "Rooster" Dollar... want any more? Billy

PS I may have seen too many years in junior high. That's why I qualify from 1970 forward.

I (Billy Jr.) got a letter from Potts yesterday, in the self addressed stamped envelope that I included in my letter to him. It reads as follows:

Hello Billy,

If anyone on hell could find me it would be you. Thank you for writing me. Maybe this spring I'll come down and see you. I like this place except for winter. Last year we got two 2ft snows. It's cold as hell in the winter. Tell everyone I know, if they like they can write me. Write me any time.

Take Care,

Billy

So hey Mike, I don't know if he will attend the reunion or not, but I'm making the assurance that he's covered if he can or not. I'll send in two standard reservations for him and one for me. If he doesn't show, then the reservations will help to cover someone else that's needy.

Your friend,

Billy Arthur Jr.

The Carolina Times was founded as The Standard Advertiser in 1921 by Charles Arrant, who died in 1922. In 1927 Louis E. Austin, originally from Enfield, North Carolina, purchased the paper and renamed it The Carolina Times. He transformed the paper into the most important voice for black North Carolinians during the 1930s.

Austin edited and published The Carolina Times from 1927 until his death in 1971. The paper's motto was "The Truth Unbridled," and Austin used the paper to publicize racial inequities and to fight for racial equality in North Carolina and throughout the United States. The paper continues to be published today by Austin's grandson, Kenneth Edmonds.

Her Paper Beat a Drum for Justice

Mrs. Vivian Austin Edmonds, longtime owner and publisher of The Carolina Times, the state's oldest black-owned newspaper, was a pioneer in journalism whose service to community is legendary. Mrs. Edmonds, who had been in declining health for some time, died Sunday. She was 80. Mrs. Edmonds' roots in journalism ran deep. She inherited The Carolina Times from her father, Louis E. Austin, who died in 1971. Mr. Austin bought the newspaper in 1922, when it was called the Standard Advertiser. He changed the name six years later to The Carolina Times.

Like her highly regarded father, Mrs. Edmonds was untiring and unyielding in pursuit of justice. Both believed deeply, as their editorials and news coverage reflected, in black education, black voting rights and working to improve the black community. And while the civil rights movement occurred on Mr. Austin's watch, it was Mrs.Edmonds' charge to ensure the hard-won promise of full citizenship for blacks was honored by a still-balky America.

Mrs. Edmonds was a 1944 Hillside graduate and 1948 N.C. Central University graduate, who also received a master's from NCCU. Although ink flowed heavily in her veins, she spent 12 years as a guidance counselor in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.

From 1971 to 1975, she ran The Carolina Times on an absentee basis, but returned in 1975 to take full editorial and managerial control after the paper fell on hard financial times. It says much about Mrs. Edmond's business savvy that she was able to rescue The Carolina Times from the brink of death. She was honored for her business acumen, along with several other prominent women, at the first annual YMCA Women of Achievement banquet. She was also a proud member of the N.C. Journalism Hall of Fame.

Mrs. Edmonds ran The Carolina Times until 2002. It is now run by her son, Kenneth Edmonds, who continues the proud family tradition. It is an amazing story that a paper such as The Carolina Times continues to survive more than eight decades after its founding, especially given the changes in the industry. Many people benefited from The Carolina Times' steady drumbeat for economic and social justice. They have Mrs. Edmonds to thank. She will be missed.
