For another of the many Twin Spins "Where Are They Now?" looks in on the Caldwell brothers. David and Larry's Father, David Caldwell Sr., was the first African-American Police officer hired in Chapel Hill. Both played standout basketball and football throughout their school days and were admired and respected for their character and leadership off the field as well.

It's another Triple Play! This trifecta from the class of 1972 is the Council siblings. Mildred and Joe Council had eight children in all including the Class of '72's own Joe, Lane and Bon. These three Councils are or have all been involved in Mama Dip's Country Cooking Restaurant from its very beginnings as a small take out shack on North Graham Street. On a Sunday in November 1976 Mama Dip (Mildred Council) opened her restaurant with $64, $40 dollars went toward food and $24 was used to make change. The morning's take was used to fund the lunch meal and lunch to fund the dinner. At the end of the day Mama Dip took home $135, and the rest is history.

Do you still get in the kitchen very much?

Mildred Council: Yeah, I do some, you know. I don’t do a lot because now I just can't get around that much. But Della is right there and has been here 27 years, you know, and on her 28th year, and she can do everything back there. And my daughter, Lane, is back there. And then [my son] Joe, the baker ...

Joseph Nathan Council Jr.

Native Son: 13 January 1952

Joe left school after 9th grade and went to work. He makes his home in Pittsboro these days and works in the kitchen at Mama Dip's.

David Louis Caldwell Jr.

David has raised five children and still lives in the same neighborhood in Chapel Hill that he grew up in. So far David has been too busy with more pressing matters than to grant an interview for this chapter of "WATN?".

These days David and his neighbors have their hands full addressing the needs of their neighborhood. Check it out. They have been and are getting a raw deal and they are doing something about it. In the first article it's David voice narrating. David has been nominated for a Chappee Award.

Seven slated for CHHS/Lincoln hall of fame

INDUCTION SLATED FOR SATURDAY EVENING AT CHAPEL HILL HIGH SCHOOL

BY W.E. WARNOCK, CHN SPORTS EDITOR

CHAPEL HILL - Sherry Norris, who has guided Chapel Hill High School teams to state championships in both girls basketball and volleyball, will lead a group of seven new members into the CHHS / Lincoln High School Athletics Hall of Fame this weekend.

Six former players are scheduled for induction into the hall: David Caldwell (basketball and football); Caroline Hill (tennis), Jerry Neville (football & track), Tony Riggsbee (football & basketball), Subir Roy (football and basketball), Chris Saffelle (football and track).

Caldwell, who played collegiate ball at N.C. Central, is the second member of the CHHS basketball class of 1972 to reach the hall, which includes a display of trophies and other mementoes outside the main entrance to the CHHS main gym. He will join Vadnay Cotton, who went on to become a top scorer at Howard. ...

Larry Torain Caldwell

Larry did a tour in the Marines. Like many in his family he took up law enforcement. Depending on who you ask Larry recently retired after serving more than 30 years as a police officer with either the NC Highway Patrol or the UNC Department of Public Safety or both. As soon as Larry checks in "WATN?" will update this episode.

Bon got on board CHHS Reunion boat early. As a member of the Reunion Steering Committee and now the LOC her experience in food and beverage and at pulling off events like this has proven invaluable. Bon also delivered the contact information for over 30 classmates placing her 3rd behind Phil Webster and "the man" for anyone who's keeping track.

From Esau: Peggy had moved into a rental house with some friends that were students at UNC, Brian and Bill. It was a big white house at 110 North Graham Street in the summer of 1976. One weekend that November they noticed some goings on across the street and they came came back with what was probably one of Mrs. Council's first sales. Julia and one of her sisters were working the register and cooking. I remember it being strictly take out at the time. Brian and Bill became quite popular at Dip's as we picked up a lot of our meals there and often, early in the morning, they walked across the street barefoot in nothing but their white boxer shorts to get a couple of Pepsi's and good southern cooking to deal with a hangover. Who would have guessed?

David Neil Kirkman

David is keeping lawyers over a three state area busy defending scam artists. The write up for this chapter "WATN?" is borrowed from Kirkman's online family tree. Dave has been nominated to receive a prestigious Chappee Award to be presented out at the reunion.

One of the Kirkman family’s most eminent late 20th century personalities is David Neil Kirkman of Chapel Hill, NC, a North Carolina Assistant Attorney General who is the scourge of con artists, swindlers and tricksters. He’s the Tarheel State’s "Mr. Consumer Fraud." In the world of crime he is simply known as "The AG Man". David’s forte is tracking down and prosecuting scammers, home repair cheats and hustlers who prey on the poor, elderly and disadvantaged.

During the past 12 years, he has become North Carolina’s foremost expert on consumer racketeering. He’s best known for coordinating a task force of 36 law enforcement agencies that smashed a multi-million, Maryland-to-Florida home repair scheme which mostly preyed on the elderly. Sixty con men were indicted and all but one convicted. He then drafted North Carolina’s 1997 telemarketing law which many states are emulating. He was appointed a North Carolina Attorney General in 1987.

David married the former Debra Skinner of Marshfield, MO, after an unusual courtship. Debra was involved in a three-car accident in Chapel Hill and the two drivers who mangled her car refused to pay damages. David sued in Debra’s behalf, won the suit, and shared a victory dinner with her which blossomed into romance. David credits Debra with getting him involved in his astonishing avocation: mountain hiking.

From Mike Esau:

It's a funny 'ol world. I remember when David was working at the gas station at Eastgate across from WCHL in the summer of 1970. I had to go in there all the time to put brake fluid in the blue green '53 Chevy I bought from Mark Powell for $50.00. One day I made off with a gallon of brake fluid while Dave was distracted but later he sold me five pounds of"racing air" at twenty cents a pound. Hard to say who came out ahead.

David Kirkman with the "Rest of the Story":

Funny indeed! Mike doesn't realize all the ways that Reid Moore and I got him back for that expensive gallon of brake fluid. There were multiple times when we told Mike he was low on oil, then poured "oil" from an empty oil can into his engine and charged him 95 cents. It's so easy to scam a scammer.

Paula has been, is and will be one of the driving forces in getting this gathering together. She was a valuable member that volunteered for the original Reunion Steering Committee in April and continues as a member of the LOC. From everything this "WATN?" reporter can gather, the reunion bank could not be in better hands. Paula's other full time job is as a member of the Administrative Staff at Petway Mills & Pearson, PA.

Maybe we can keep interest going by posting photos and stories about our class ... maybe inviting those who aren't coming to share with us something of what they would have had they been able to attend: photos, memories of high school, updates on their lives, etc.

As you probably know, "Evie" is a nickname. At a slumber party in 9th grade at my house, my mother called out "Evangiline" and Irene Treml, not knowing my actual name, replied, "She isn't here!".

Interesting Facts:

1) Evie was on the 1972 Hill Life staff, yet somehow her picture did not make the final run.

2) Evie was one of about a half dozen classmates born outside the US in Jordan (Rebel Umphlett~Germany, KANEDA Maru~Japan, Kirsten Wilhelmson~Denmark, Jean-Paul Minod~Luxembourg, Tom Loddengarrd~Afghanistan, Alicia Fernandez~Mexico, Wicca Paull Jampolsky Davidson~Montreal, Canada, Heiner & Margot Lieth~Germany).

Martha Cansler. Give it up to Wicca for finding Martha. After former "WATN?" employee Mike Esau spent hours and hours of fruitless searches in phone and address data bases; Wicca simply googled "Martha Cansler" and 'Voilá'; Martha and her husband, Danny Rosenberg, living in Portland, Oregon.

Esau: These "Where Are They Now?" episodes are a lot of fun. Then we come across a story that transcends the whole deal, knocks your socks off. Martha is a shoo-in for a Chappee Awardbetter known in the industry as a "Holy Cow".

Since "being found" in plain sight Martha has really gotten into the swing of things by helping to locate several classmates from back in the day, sending in newspaper stories and other memoribila all the way back to elementary school days

From Martha:

I remember a little about Skip, but haven't kept up with him. Curiously, I did hear about where he is recently. I have a dear cousin who is schizophrenic. Last time I was in Chapel Hill she was telling me about a clubhouse (Nova Club) they have for folks with similar problems and she mentioned Skip...that he worked there.

Another guy I've always wondered about was named Danny Miller. He was going with a girl named Phoebe that I really liked, too.

Oh, well, I lead a very quiet life now, albeit an insanely busy one. I'm currently working like a maniac on a bunch of educational materials for mortuary colleges. I had to quit my job as a funeral director. It was a VERY hard job. People assume it's the sad stuff that gets you ... yeah, that can be a challenge, but what kills you is the physical stuff. I had to be available at all hours of the day and night and to pick up folks where ever they died. You don't think about it, but some

poor soul has to gently carry that 300 lb fellow who's died on the floor in a back room in a mobile home with no ramps out to a van and cart them away. It was back breaking and I was always just barely averting a physical disaster. Sooner or later my luck would have run out. So now I'm using my design skills (much better than my weight lifting skills) and my mortuary knowledge to help students out and I stand to make a tidy living at it. The amusing thing to me is this: who

thinks that someday they'll grow up and be the world's greatest designer of funeral education materials? I love the lunacy of that...

I wound up going to the NC School of the Arts and I

occasionally see a student I went to school with in some part in a TV show or something (she was a drama/acting major) Her name is Jeanetta Arnette - I haven't spoken to her since 1972, but I do see her. It's been fun getting Jeanetta sightings. I can gauge how old I must look by seeing how old Jeanetta looks. I've seen her on a soccer field with Rodney Dangerfield, on a Star Trek space ship, holding onto an iceberg in the Potomac River after a plane crash and being a harried nurse in a NYC hospital. Ain't life marvelously absurd?

Best wishes

MacEntyre was busy making videos documenting the run up to the return of the brothers and sisters from back in the day to Chapel Hill next Memorial Day weekend. The first two seasons of CHHS 72 Videos received rave reviews. Nothing more has been uploaded to YouTube. There are rumors swirling concerning the lull in this very popular show and supposed bad blood between "WATN?" and Mac.

Dagny Taggart's statement to the press (Owner/President of "WATN?" Studios): "There is no truth to the rumor that "WATN?" has been ordered by the Federal Communications Commision or NC Attorney General D. Kirkman to profile MacEntyre. I instructed J. Galt to cover as many Class of '72 alumni as possible regardless of circumstances. Mac's CHHS 72 Videos are a great distraction to supplement what we have going on here. There is also no truth to the rumor that we tried to buy him out."

MacEntyre's response: "Who is John Galt?"

John Blair Embree Burch

On the surface, CHHS alumnus Dr. John Burch appears to be the Scientific Review Officer for the Cellular Mechanisms in Aging and Development Study Section in NIH, someone we could definitely use for this shindig.

The more time we spent shooting this episode the more mysterious things became. He is all over the Internet as being in high level government meetings behind closed doors. Hmmm

Who is John Burch, really? The name and associated picture appear all over the world as attending "meetings behind closed doors". "WATN?" has unearthed several possible aliases attached to the man behind the glasses including John B. E. Burch, John B. Eburch and John B. Nyborg. And lately, evidence that ties him to the "Goose" Family Syndicate has surfaced.

More from the man claiming to be John:

I did my postdoctoral from 1981to 1985; at the Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. Then as a faculty member at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, PA worked in developmental biology, molecular biology and molecular genetics (what could be more fun?)

I married Ingrid Nyborg who has worked for The Nature Conservancy since 1990. We have a daughter, Erika.

My wife and I enjoy living in DC where we can walk to the metro, cafes, bookstores, etc. After many years in the suburbs of Philly complete with dog, cat, yard, gardens, etc., we seriously downsized (still renting storage space in Philly) and moved to the city after Erika graduated from college.

Is David Kirkman part of the cover story for "John"?: "I've kept in touch with John. He's a Big Dog at the National Institutes of Health just outside of Washington, DC., a Major League scientist. He has a nice family. They are all very smart, of course. John had a really good camera in H.S. and I bet he's got some great photos of us somewhere. Come to think of it, he's got my slides of several of us re-enacting Homer's "The Odyssey" in the halls of Guy B. Phillips. Great photos of Jackie Pascarella as Penelope, Goose Waters as one of the evil suiters, Mrs. Harry as one of the Sirens, Mr. I.C. Yagle as the Cyclops. Burch, of course, was Odysseus."

It's all right here: AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY

[Excerpt]

I grew up in Chapel Hill. NC. At the time, it looked like Barbie’s college town. It wasn’t pink, but it sure was precious. As a teen, I started having some problems. It seems I have some mental malfunctions that can be troublesome (see The Wack) ... Things began to get difficult for me. My mother was in a quandary and did the only thing she could think of. She had me committed to Butner, the state mental hospital; a situation that came to be viewed as a farce by the staff. I languished there for about a year, in a peculiar brand of hell that defies succinct analogies. Eventually I was rescued by a dedicated psychologist ...

I graduated from the NC School of the Arts High School with a focus on visual arts. After one year in art college, I went to work in the graphic arts, where I learned all the lettering skills that show up in my personal art work ... I moved to NYC to pursue a career in animation. I worked in film, and later computer animation, for over 20 years, ...I moved to Portland, OR in 1986 ...Eight years ago I gave up my media career with a desire for more meaningful work. After several years of training, I’m working part-time as a licensed funeral director and embalmer ...
