Wow! In this edition of "Where Are They Now?" we travel to Appalachian St. Univ. to visit with CHHS alum Dr. Phoebe Pollitt. She is not only a professor in the nursing program at ASU that wears a lot of other hats but in 2006 she helped form and build the program from scratch!!! She has also published several interesting articles about minority nurses that made a difference.

Usually "WATN?" has to drag an interview out of our classmates. Not so with Frances. “Where are they now?” would like to thank Frances for taking the plunge and kicking the series off.
Here’s Frances unplugged:
40 Years!!!!! You really don't want a book ...lol! Well, I married my current husband in December of 1999, and he's a disabled Vietnam veteran. He went over in 1969 and was hit by a booby-trap in 1970 and I helped him get back in touch with fellow veterans from the platoon that he was sergeant of after about 30 years of them having lost contact, by doing searches online; wish I could still have that kind of luck finding our remaining classmates but I keep trying.
Prior to 1999, I had 3 other marriages:
1977-1979/80 to a preacher in SC, now deceased.
1985-1989 to a builder in Chapel Hill that is now remarried & lives in FL and
1995-1996 to a best friend who changed to what, I won't say, and is now deceased.
The best that resulted from the hubby number two was traveling all over Europe each year with two trips to Europe. The one in the spring was one that I planned for going to Scotland ... didn't have to use my German there. All the other European trips I had to use French and German.

It is great to hear from everyone so I thought I would chime in ... I went to nursing school in the hometown and moved to Boone in 1980 - been here ever since and teach nursing at ASU. I have been divorced, widowed and now married again (hope springs eternal). I have two grown sons - both married but no grandchildren yet. I garden, kayak, hike (really more likely to stroll these days) on Blue Ridge Parkway trails. I write lots of NC nursing history. Life is good, everyone is welcome for a mountain adventure - just emai. MBy brother is in touch with Ras Ditty's (Skippy Tyroler) sister~Barbara Tyroler. He enjoyed her recent art display in downtown Chapel Hill. Robert Holten and Martha Crandell live up here so I'll try to get them hooked up.
"WATN?" went looking for Vickie at her home on the old Camp Pow-Wow site. She and husband Harlan Reid Hilton, Class of 1970, were gracious enough to open up their home and land for the festivities at our 20th reunion. Vickie also went to Appalachian St. Univ. , got her teaching degree and went on to receive her Master’s in Education at UNC. Vickie started teaching in Rutherford County, 7th & 8th grade; then moved to Chatham County~over 35 years teaching 4th through 8th grades.

Frances: ¡Mais oui! J'espère qu'ils peuvent le faire.
I've taught or worked with kids of all ages over the past 40 years, youngest were toddlers and oldest were in an associate's program in college. My favorite ages to teach are what I'm teaching right now; 4th grade through 8th grade at Southeastern Christian Academy.
I've also done numerous other jobs when teaching jobs weren't available, the furthest from teaching jobs that I've done were reservations with American Airlines, working front desk at a conference center at Montreat College in NC mountains, and handling book and tape sales at Christian conferences traveling all over.

While I was never in the Army myself (!), my husband retired in 1991 after 26 years in Special Forces. We were supposed to get married & go back to Okinawa, but they closed out that group before I got to go there. Probably our most interesting assignment was in the Panama Canal Zone, just before it was handed back over to Panama. We were fortunate enough to be granted permission to drive to Panama, a fascinating journey. We were stationed there 76-79, lived on Ft Davis; hubby was stationed on Ft Gulick (3rd Bn, 10th SFG) and I worked on Ft Davis with Civil Service.

In this edition "Where Are They Now?" tracks another meandering journey. Martha started out on August 22, 1954 in Smithville, NC. Her parents, Clifton Earl and Betty Crandell soon pulled up stakes and relocated to Chapel Hill. Martha became restless with what CHHS had to offer and struck out on her own after after 10th grade. After a few years in the restaurant industry she did a quick inventory, got her GED and went to work as a dental technician. A lot more training and career advancements led Martha to the radiology and nuclear medicine department as a technician at Boone Hospital Center. Martha has been retired for a few years now. Her daughter is expecting in about eight months and Martha is moving back to Chapel Hill to be closer to both.

It seems at every turn the continuing "WATN?" team investigating the Goose Family Syndicate story uncovers another thread reaching back to the Class of 1972. One of the Holtons, Betsy, lives on a property owned by Goose Waters. "WATN?" has requested that NC Attorney General David Kirkman subpoena the rental records of both the Holtons and Goose and has made a request through the FOIA for the AG's office to release all files on Goose and his cronies. The AG is refusing and filed a complaint in the courts to get an injunction against "WATN?" to cease and desist in order to protect "an ongoing investigation of a sensitive nature". Trish Stanford Hunt Love has been coaxed out of retirement to review all the court filings and make a ruling. Hmm...
A spokesperson for Kirman's office released this statement: "We've been down this road before and there is nothing to investigate here. Goose Waters and his associates are clean. The manpower and assets of this office remain focused on investigating the activities of "WATN?" Studios and we continue to seek Mr. Johnathon Galt as a material witness."

Al and Marilyn Tyroler bundled up 'Skippy', Barbara and Billy and moved from Asheville to Chapel Hill in 1960. I've been in Rochester now since 1979. Geez, that's a long time! Actually it's a great place to live and raise a family. We have 2 daughters, both living and working in NYC. The oldest, Hanna, has been part of the Brian Ross investigative reporting team at ABC news, but is leaving the end of this summer to go to graduate school in Boston. Her sister, Marisa, is starting year 2 at a public relations firm and trying to figure out a long term plan.
Now, here's the REST of the story, as the guy on the radio used to say....They both graduated from Duke. Yes, it's true. Rob Anderson has razzed me about this plenty. My wife went to undergraduate at Duke (though she got her quality graduate psychology PhD at UNC!) as did a number of her relatives going back some generations, so I guess it was just going to happen. Truth is they got a great education and loved it there. What can I say, other than Go Tar Heels!! March is a 3 on 1 time in our house, if you know what I mean.
I'm on the faculty of the medical school at the University of Rochester, and quite a number of years ago came to find out that Jimmie Taylor is on the faculty at the University of Washington in Seattle. We're both in pediatrics so sometimes see each other at national meetings. It is fun to reminisce. When we first reconnected, he let me know that he goes by Jim now, not Jimmie!
Anyway, I hope I can make it to the reunion.

True story from Mike Esau:
Dave and I were lab partners in Mrs. Justice's 7th grade science class. We were doing a probability experiment by flipping a nickel into one of those disecting tins filled with black wax tallying up the number of heads or tails. Mrs. Justice came over and we started needling her about the possibility of the nickel landing on its edge. While she was explaining that was not one of the possible outcomes and it would never happen anyway David flipped it and damn if it did not land on its edge and just sit there. We all three sat there staring at it and each other until Mrs. Justice calmly reached out, flicked it over, said "Heads" and then walked off.

To follow up on David's lead "Where Are They Now?" presents the still incomplete segment on our own Jimmie Taylor - a modern day Dr. Spock as in Dr. Spock's Baby & Child Care not the pointy eared dude. "WATN?" is still waiting for Dr. Taylor or one one of our field reporters to check in and update us.
So far, five classmates have turned up in the "Emerald City". Any guesses on the other four?

For those of you who remember the OLD tv series "RAWHIDE", I took the notes and made up a Transit version ( I drive a city bus). If you've never heard of rawhide, google the theme song to get an idea of what it sounded like originally then use my words. After that, tell me whatcha think.

Rollin', rollin', rollin'.
Rollin', rollin', rollin'.
Rollin', rollin', rollin'.
Rollin', rollin', rollin'.
Keep rollin’, rollin’, rollin’,
Though the bus is broken,
And my butt is swollen, rawhide.
Through rain and wind and weather,
Hell bent for leather,
Wishin’ I had more overtime.
For all the things I'm missin',
Good vittles, fun, and fishin’,
Are waiting at the end of my ride.
Let ‘em out, let ‘em in
Drop the ramp, strap ‘em down
Let ‘em out, let ‘em in,
Rawhide.
Let ‘em out, let ‘em in,
Drop the ramp, strap ‘em down,
Let ‘em out, let ‘em in,
Rawhide.

AKA: "The Gentleman Bandit"
Bobby Brame went AWOL from Guy B. Phillips JHS shortly after 8th grade. By the time WATN? chased him down he had gone AWOL once again in 1982. Only this time it was from the NC Department of Corrections.
Then this subsequent story popped up on the radar detailing a second escape from custody and recapture.
"Gentleman Bandit" Gets 35-year Term
October 27, 1991|By DEBORAH P. WORK
Robert Brame, ``The Gentleman Bandit`` suspected of more than 50 bank robberies in Florida and nationwide since 1985, has been sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Brame, 37, of Durham, N.C., was sentenced on Friday by U.S. District Judge Horace T. Ward in Atlanta after he had pleaded guilty to armed bank robbery, use of a firearm during a violent crime and possession of a firearm by a felon in connection with the robbery of a Marietta, Ga., bank. Ward said the sentence would be served after a previous 50-year sentence is completed.
Brame, who also had been wanted for bank robberies in Broward County, was known as ``The Gentleman Bandit`` because he entered banks dressed in a business suit and carrying a briefcase.
He was arrested near Atlanta in January after a clerk in an electonics store recognized him from a newspaper photograph and called authorities, the FBI said. In the most recent Broward case, Brame is suspected of robbing a Coral Springs branch of Citizens & Southern Bank at 1857 University Drive last November.
The FBI had been looking for Brame for more than a year after he escaped from a county jail while awaiting a bank robbery trial. Brame had been convicted and sentenced on Oct. 10, 1989, to 50 years in federal prison in Leavenworth, Kan., for bank robbery in California.
But he escaped on March 22, 1990, from the Clay County Jail in Green Cove Springs, where he was being held while awaiting trial on a five-count bank robbery indictment in Jacksonville. After his escape, Brame went on a bank robbery spree in the South, hitting North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida, FBI agents said.
Before the 1989 conviction, Brame was on a two-year robbery spree that began on Nov. 4, 1986, at a Plantation bank. He is suspected of robbing 30 banks in Florida and Georgia from 1986 to 1988.
In Bobby's own words:
And, lo and behold, we did get a response from Bobby. Click here to read the long letter and view the photo....
Reunion organizers figure the third time is the charm. Bobby was sent an invite to the reunion. Although we did consider asking him to make a couple of withdrawals en-route to help fund the reunion, our good sense held out and we sent him the normal invitation. We hope he has a fridge for the magnet. Needless to say Bobby will most likely be nominated for a Chappee Award.

Straight from Betsy:
Hi everyone! I'm happy to be back in the Triangle after living in Winston-Salem for years. I loved it there but missed the Piedmont red clay :)
I went to UNC-CH and got my undergrad degree in history, married and then divorced, tried to figure out what I was going to do with my life next and ended up going back to grad school at Carolina in psychology. They always tell you don't stay in your first job for more than five years but I stayed at Wake Forest University for sixteen because it was a great place for me, beautiful and wonderful friends. Then I had a yearning to be back in God's country so I took a position at the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State providing counseling services for students. It's great being around lots of other animal lovers though I promise you my blood will always run Carolina Blue. My sister and her family and my parents still live in Chapel Hill so I see them and other Chapel Hill friends often, and I have a black lab who basically runs the show at my house.
It's good to read up on everyone's lives. Thanks to Michael and Wicca and others for all their hard work!

"WATN?" has an update on the Angela Lee story. Angela is president of the non-profit, Carolina Pros. Carolinapros is made up of athletes that played for Dean Smith and focuses on giving back to the community. More onCarolina Pros .
That's not all. Angela is taking the lead along with others including Stephanie Perry Rivas in opening a new charter school starting in the 2012/13 achool year, the Howard and Lillian Lee Scholars Charter School.
"Where Are They Now?" lifts the veil of illusion and Bill Patterson is revealed, or is he?
Bill is in the running for one of the coveted Chappee Awards to be given out at the reunion. Bill has a spread in Silk Hope, NC. He has three grown children; Samantha, Eve and Cabel. Bill left CHHS in 11th grade and moved to South Carolina. There is a story for another time of he and James Lasley running a zoo there. The "WATN?" production crew spent a couple of days following Bill around and talking with him.
Bill started his tree service company nearly thirty years ago.
Then this tale veers from interesting to mythic "You can't make this shit up!" proportions. Bill owns and maintains a forest preserve in the beautiful jungles of Costa Rica; one hundred acres of prime monkey habitat! The purpose of Finca Mono de Cuervito is to protect and enhance rich primary and secondary rain-forest.

It does not get much more Chapel Hill/Carrboro than the Basnight clan. Stretching all the way back to the 1920's anyone that has spent any time going to school in town had at least one Basnight kid in their class or just ahead or just behind them.
Jesse granted our "WATN?" crew a little face time as his foursome waited for their tee off time. Jesse and Janis have raised their daughters, Ashley and Lindsay, in Chapel Hill. He continues to actively support the area by lending his expertise and time to various civic groups.
Congratulations are in order as the family celebrated Lindsay's wedding this past summer.

If you can just get your mind together
Then come on across to me
We'll hold hands and then we'll watch the sunrise
From the bottom of the sea
But first, are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?
Well, I have...
Trumpets and violins I can hear in distance
I think they're calling our names
Maybe now you can't hear them, but you will
If you just take hold of my hand
Oh, but are you experienced?
Have you ever been experienced?
Not necessarily stoned, but beautiful...

"WATN?" apologizes for almost missing this Twin Spin. Siblings Linda and Jim Critcher were born two days and two years apart (Jim~ April 18, 1953 in Las Vegas; Linda~ April 20, 1955 in Oxford, NC), moved with their family to Chapel Hill in time for both to start and finish their education to high school graduation in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro City School system earning them a spot in the CHHS Vanguard. Linda, Class of 1973, took enough credits and to join the 1972 graduating class with Jim.

It's remarkable the number of classmates with the talent and guts to make a career in entertainment and the arts. Jim Critcher is another classmate that continues to do what he loves. When he is not performing he gives guitar lessons at Shiloh Music Center and also teaches music classes locally. Occasionally, you can also find him in room 206 at the Heritage Christian Academy teaching. In Durham on July 26, 1986 James got married to Karen Clark and eventually settled in Tennessee and are raising three children, Jimmy~Dean & Kami. They hail from Franklin, TN these days.
I speak over two thousand languages, including Crow, Dodo and Unicorn. I had a classical education.
Another "WATN?" Twin Spin. Earl and Linda Bynum are one of the ten couples "WATN?" knows of so far that paired up in matrimony from the '72 Class. Can you name the other nine? Linda and Earl have one daughter, Erika, who tied the knot in the last couple of years and lives in Cary with her husband. They are active in their church, St. Paul's AME Church.

Along with Elliot Warnock and Carl Fincke, Bill made a career out of his passion for writing and reporting by throwing in with the newspaper industry. Bill spent a lot of his career as a reporter, capital bureau and political writer at the St. Petersburg Times in addition to acting as editor and reporter at other media outlets; most recently as the executive editor for the Hendersonville Times-News. Bill is married to Elizabeth and they along with their children, Will and Melissa, currently reside in Flat Rock, NC. Bill does consulting work for Landmark Community Media and for his own firm; Bill Moss Media.
Update from Gary:
Carol (Creath) and I have been married since 1979 and have three children; Melissa, Sam and Daniel. After getting my degree at UNC, my MA and PhD at Ann Arbor, we returned to Chapel Hill from 1984 through 1987 when I was on a research fellowship at UNC. Then in 1987 it was back to Ann Arbor again, where for four years I taught at the University of Michigan and editedThe Anchor Bible Dictionary, a six-volume encyclopedia of the Bible which was published in 1992.
In 1991 we moved to Oneonta, NY, where for the past 20 years I have been professor of religious studies at Hartwick College. Frankly, adjustment to grey skies and long winters has not been easy for a Southerner like me, but it has proven to be a very nice place to raise a family. All of our kids got interested in theater and dance activities, and as a result, Carol and I both became active in the local theater scene.
In 2007, when it appeared that I might return to UNC, Carol began circulating her resume and soon was hired in the Office of Research at UNC’s Medical School. The economic downturn of 2008 scuttled my planned return to UNC, leaving me (in a sense) “stranded” here in upstate New York.
In the fall of 2010 we bought a house in southeast Durham. Every three weeks I manage to fly down for the weekend. The Oneonta house already seems large and empty. I am looking forward to re-connecting with high school classmates at the 40th Reunion of the CHHS Class of 1972 .

From Eve:
Life? OK: Briefly
After UNC (GO HEELS) I moved to Urbana, Illinois - home of the Fighting Illini, who were on probation when I arrived and had NO real basketball team. Thus ended my fascination with college b-ball; until 2005 when the Tar Heels played the Illini in the final game of the NCAA Tournament. Talk about divided loyalties. I was a mess. Ah, but I digress.
At Illinois, I met my husband, Kurt Potgieter, who was in grad school at the time. He then went to Vet School and is now a small animal veterinarian. Meanwhile, I gave up research (neurophysiology of circadian rhythms) for full time teaching (yup, another CHHS grad is a teacher). I taught Medical Neuroscience to first year medical students for a lot of years at the Medical School at Urbana; brains & things.
Kurt loves to garden (his PhD is in Plant Systematics) and he's from South Africa, so he wanted to relocate from the cooler midwest to the warm & sunny south - with it's long growing season. FIne with me. :-)
The Medical College of Georgia and the University of Georgia (the *other* oldest public university in the country) were starting a partnership medical campus & I got hired on. WHOO-HOOO!! So here we are, in Athens, Georgia.
We finally bought a house with a little land last fall outside of Commerce (the town on which the book "Cold Sassy Tree" was based). We spent the last few months setting fence posts (yes, by hand) and brought our horses (who are now elderly & retired but still eating us out of house and home) to live on the property. And, yes, we have a garden. I spend my 'spare time' (such as it is) looking up new recipes for tomatoes and okra!
That's the highlights, I guess.
We DID spend some time living in different places while we looked for jobs in the same town. The best part of that was that Kurt lived for a while in Fayetteville, NC - which is a surprisingly pleasant and pretty town (not what I remembered from the 70's) - and a second year in lil' Washington, NC - which is a GREAT little town. The worst part was that I saw him only four times per year for 2 years.
Hope that's about what you were after. If it's too much, hit delete. If it's too little, well...I hope to see everyone at the reunion. ;-)
"WATN?" reporter, Mike Esau, broke bread with Teresa, Joe and her son Topaz to celebrate Topaz's birthday back in August in Rheinbeck, NY for dinner at at the AROI Thai Restaurant.
Teresa has been busy these many years. Most recently she landed the position of head librarian at the Bronx Library in NYC. She has been to Washington, Colorado and California in her travels through life and still makes it back to God's country to visit family still in the area. Joe and Teresa have made their home in Elizaville in the Hudson Valley of New York since 2004.

Teresa on Teresa:
I got the invitation, may indeed come, though I am still trying to work through some things.
Like Tony Lorie, I have lots of stories. I traveled a lot before I met Joe, we met in Boulder and that is where our first son was born; the second son was born in Olympia, where we attended college at The Evergreen State College. Then it was on to NY, where I earned another degree at the New School for Social Research. Then to NC where I picked up another Masters degree, before accepting a librarian position at UNC-Pembroke, and then an Associate Director position at Fayetteville State University library. Most recently in 2004 I accepted the position here in NY. It has been a wild ride. We still have land in NC, and come visit our son Jules and his family including our three grandchildren in Moore County.
The ride is not so wild anymore. We are building a new Library at Bronx Community College(a very big deal, it is the first building ever built by NYC for the college and desperately needed). I expect to be in it, delivering resources and services, as soon as August of 2012. My commute is a wild ride, in a sense, because I travel 96 miles each way, but the road I travel is scenic and beautiful, there is no commercial traffic, and no bridges or tolls. Work is intense and has its rewards.
I have enjoyed looking over the lists of names, and remembering people. I would like to send a "hi" to all, especially those that remember me.
Stay in touch,
Teresa
