Kenneth Mann
Kenny Mann now resides in Chatham County. He has two children; Kemory, who now plays football at ECU and a daughter, Kendra, who lives in Charlotte. After his one year at Chapel Hill HS 1969 /70 he transferred to prep school at The Laurinburg Institute (where Kenny Edmonds went, too) and graduated in 1972. Kenny attended Barber Scotia College in Concord before transferring to NC Central University to be closer to his band. An old classmate from Laurinburg, Mickey Gamble, joined the band in 1974 and he gets the credit for the name change to Liquid Pleasure from the The bitter end combo.
The Soul Dynamics was the name thru Guy B Phillips Jr High with. Kenny's cousin, Daryl Mason, Hugh Hunter and Earl Bynum up front in a Four Tops type style. Kenny Mann credits Earl Bynum for the tight harmony that the band was famous for.
"Earl was ahead of his time he new how to blend vocals and to never over sing and he never had to be the 'Star'. Every group that's been successful has to have an Earl Bynum type in it".
Hugh Hunter was multi-talented. He could dance, sing lead or backgroung vocals and was the second best drummer in town behind the legend~Ronnie Atwater. Daryl Mason, Kenny's and Melvin Farrington's other cousin was solid as a rock background singer. Quietly, Melvin Farrington started perfecting his craft while quickly establishing himself as one of the top bass players in the country. Melvin also ushered Liquid Pleasure into the new electronics age with modern instruments updated songs and a new professionalism.
In 1978 Kenny's grandfather passed away and he admits he lost it for a year or two and credits MeLvin for holding the fort together:
" Yea I walked the streets of Chapel Hill then I walked the streets of Los Angeles wIth other hopefuls; Arsenio Hall, Damon Waynans and Rosanne Barr. I wrote songs and did stand up comedy."
Kenny limped back to Chapel Hill Liquid Pleasure signed a contract with Hit Attractions in 1981 and the band went full time. Melvin continues to direct the band musically and has created two versions of Liquid Pleasure; the original six piece and a larger 12 piece live horn group with three female vocalist. One of the gIrls is the multi talented Gwen Fowler actually Melvins wife a powerful singer that will remind many of patti labelle. Doing over 150 shows a year Liquid Pleasure's energy and musical variety will amaze you and Kenny will probably work in a joke or two.
