Helton's son, Mr. Darius Helton, passed away on Tuesday morning, October 3rd, at approximately 4 o'clock a.m. The funeral service has been set for Saturday, October 7th, 12 noon at the Logan Chapel CME Church, 9505 Parkton Road, Charlotte, NC 28215. Darius Helton, an all-conference offensive lineman for North Carolina Central University in the mid-1970s, passed away early Tuesday (Oct. 3) morning, just one day after celebrating his 52nd birthday in Charlotte, N.C.

Helton represented the Eagles on the gridiron in 1972 and 1974-76, and was a part of NCCU's 1972 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship team. He was voted First-Team All-MEAC as a senior in 1976, and was a two-time Pittsburgh Courier First-Team All-American (1975 and 1976). Following his playing days at NCCU, Helton was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fourth round of the 1977 National Football League (NFL) Draft.
