April 24 – 26. Dixie Fellowship and Chapter Meeting @ Camp Bud Schiele, Rutherford, NC. There will be 1,200+ participants from 11 Lodges from the South East Region (SR5). Fun competition between Lodges and learn more about the OA. Our April Chapter meeting will be held during Dixie. Atta Kulla Kulla’s Spirit theme is kind of confidential (don’t want other lodges to find out). But if you remember what Ca-Nu-Pa’s Theme was for 2008 Fall Fellowship, that’s what AKK’s will be at Dixie. E-mail me, any Ca-Nu-Pa Officer, or ask your Troop’s OA Rep to find out what the spirit theme is.

OA Troop Elections. Please begin to prepare to schedule your Troop OA Elections. The elections need to be completed by May. We have a Ca-Nu-Pa Outreach and Election Team ready to come visit and speak to your Troop.

OA Election Suggested Planning Timeline:

Troop OA Rep set a date for OA Elections with Chapter Chief – (usually 60 days prior)

Troop OA Rep begins to promote OA to Troop – (usually 45 days prior)

Troop OA Rep Call patrol leaders and make sure the Troop will be present – (usually 30 days prior)

Troop OA Rep follows-up with Chapter to make sure election team will be present – (usually 7 days prior)

Troop OA Rep and PLC recognized new OA Member at Court of Honor – after Summer Induction (extremely important)

OA Eligibility: Youth are elected by members of their Troop. To be eligible for the OA, a Scout must hold the First Class rank, experienced 15 days and nights of Boy Scout Camping during the two-year period prior to the election. The 15 days and nights must include one, but not more then one, long-term camping consisting of six consecutive days and five nights, demonstrate Scout spirit and be active in the Troop. The Scoutmaster approves slate of OA candidate prior to election and attests to Scout Spirit. As long as at least one youth is elected into the OA, the Troop Committee may nominate one adult to be selected. Adults over 21 are selected based on their ability to perform the duties necessary to help the Ordeal fulfill its obligation and purpose, not for recognition or for prior achievements. Adults are nominated by the Troop Committee and recommendation are forward to the Lodge Selection Committee and approved by the Scout Executive serving as the Supreme Council of the Fire. Adults also must have met the minimum camping requirements set for the youth. One adult can be nominated for every 50 registers active Scouts. Honorary membership in the OA is not authorized and shall not be given.

Annual Lodge Workday and May Chapter Meeting, Saturday May 9th, 9am to 3pm. at Camp Old Indian. Bring bag lunch. We’ll fix mattresses and clean out cabins and spread mulch. Depends on where you’ll be assigned. Bring work gloves, shovel, pitch fork, buckets, water hoses, duct tape, liquid dishwater detergent, scrub brush. Ca-Nu-Pa introduces Peace Pipe upgrade at Spring Fellowship. Ca-Nu-Pa are the keepers of the Peace Pipe. Ca-Nu-Pa introduced a new Peace Pipe (or Sacred Pipe), the Ca-Nu-Pa totem, at the Spring Fellowship and it was smoking.

Ca-Nu-Pa Earns 1st Place Finishes at Spring Fellowship. Ca-Nu-Pa takes first place in all Spring Fellowship Quest Events. Al Roberts (T-215) was key to Ca-Nu-Pa's success with his 1st place time in the log raising event.

Brotherhood Congratulations! to Thomas McAllister (T-215) and Richie Hunter (T-215) on earning Brotherhood during Spring Fellowship. Brotherhood is a level of understanding for those Scouts and Scouters whose primary obligation is still to their unit, but who also wish to expand their service to the Lodge. Don’t forget that you can earn Brotherhood during any week at Camp Old Indian. Brotherhood questioning is usually on Monday evenings. We need 8 more Brotherhood conversion to reach our goal of 10 for 2009.

Brotherhood Requirements:

Time – You must be an Ordeal member for at least 10 months.

Dues – Your dues must be current in the Chapter/Lodge.

Letter – You must write a letter to the Chapter Secretary (Tyler White) addressing the following topics:

· What you have done for your unit since your election and becoming an Ordeal Member?

· How you will serve your Chapter and Lodge as a Brotherhood member?

· What the Obligation means to you?

You must memorize the following:

· The Obligation of the Order of the Arrow

· The Song of the Order of the Arrow

· The Admonition of the Order of the Arrow

· The Handclasp and Sign of the Order of the Arrow

You should understand the purpose and intent of the Ordeal and its Ceremonies – It’s in the OA Handbook –

2009 Chapter Elections Results. Elections were held at Spring Fellowship. Chapter Chief, Johnny Culwell (T-97), Vice Chief, David Buchanan (T-215), Chapter Secretary, Derrick Brown, (T-97). To be eligible for Chapter office, Arrowman need to have reached Brotherhood status.

1 to 50 mile Backpacking opportunity. Don’t forget, June 5 – 10th. , 1 to 50 mile backpacking opportunity sponsored by Ca-Nu-Pa, open to Troops in the area. Thanks to Mr. Kyle Anderson (T-215), one of the Co-Advisors for the Ca-Nu-Pa Outdoor/Meeting Committee. If you don’t want to hike far or backpack, that’s okay. Just come. Or bring a boat, fish and tent camp. It will start at Lake Moultrie. Hike around the lake Moultrie (about 24 miles) then head down the Swamp Fox Trail. Opportunity to earn 50-Miler Award. AKK Indian Affairs Practices. Indian Affairs is vital part of the OA and is made up of Ceremonial teams, Indian Dance, Drum, Song, and Indian Lore. If you get involved Indian Affairs, you will develop a better understanding of the OA and help OA continue to thrive. Ceremony teams usually practice every 2nd Sunday at 2:00pm (except during summer camp which is done at COI). Meeting location has changed to across Hwy 385 from Council / Scout Shop. Meet at Holland Park Church of Christ, 1131 Holland Road, Simpsonville. Across from Mauldin Middle School on frontage Rd. Just Google for the map. AKK Lodge is looking for Exporee OA Volunteers to serve on the 2009 OA Service Corps for the Council Exporee. The service corps will be there to help out with the event. Needs are parking cars, working events on Saturday and helping out with the shows as well. The service corps is looking for 30 youths and 10 adults to serve. There is a $25.00 fee, which covers 4 meals, 1 OA Service Corps T-shirt, 1 council Exporee patch, and 2 special OA Service Corps Patches. These patches will only be given out to those who serve. 2010 National Jamboree. Several Ca-Nu-Pa Arrowman are registered for Jamboree. There are few spots left in the Council contingent comprised of 5 Troops. The Jamboree Troop for Six and Twenty Troop is filling up. Approximate number of Scouts signed up from Six and Twenty District troops are: 2 from T-5, 10 from T-215, 10 from T-97, 1 from T-356. Don’t delay. Not many spot left in the 6&20 Troop. Ca-Nu-Pa Stuff. If you want a Ca-Nu-Pa T-shirt you need to e-mail Mr. Darrell at arphil22@cs.com and get on the list. We reorder after we have about 12 or so signed up. SS is about $12. LS is about $17. Custom Ca-Nu-Pa Red Shoulder loops (not pictured) are about $4.50 while supply lasts. I think we’re changing color to new green (?). We’re out of hats but if you want one we’ll need to start a list.
