Reading Across the Curriculum

1. The student reads a minimum of 25 grade-level appropriate books or book equivalents (approximately 1,000,000 words) per year from a variety of subject disciplines.

2. The student participates in discussions related to curricular learning in all subject areas.

3. The student acquires new vocabulary in each content area and uses it correctly.

4. The student establishes a context for information acquired by reading across subject areas.

Dekalb County Schools challenge each student to read 25 books over the course of the school year. For each 150 pages read, students will write a summary including details regarding plot, characters, and setting. Once a summary is checked by Ms. Smith or myself, the student earns a sticker on his/her class reading chart. Each month students on target for the 25 Book Standard receive rewards and positives for their reading. We encourage students to pick books from genres they enjoy reading.
